High school sets the foundation for your college admissions trajectory from the moment freshman year begins.
Protecting your cumulative GPA early is essential, as recovering from a slow academic start takes significantly more effort than maintaining high standards from day one. Rather than spreading yourself thin across dozens of clubs, focus on deep involvement in two or three activities where you can build real expertise and step into leadership roles.
Thriving in high school also requires building sustainable daily routines. Above all, prioritize a consistent sleep schedule; academic stamina relies heavily on rest, and sacrificing sleep for late-night scrolling will only undermine your performance.

When a student turns 18 or steps foot onto a college campus, their educational privacy rights legally shift under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Overnight, parents who are used to managing report cards, attendance, and schedules are locked out of their child’s academic records. Universities are legally prohibited from sharing grades, course enrollment, or disciplinary records with parents without explicit, written consent from the student.
Colleges view this boundary as a way to encourage young adults to take full ownership of their academic path. Parents can still offer vital emotional and strategic guidance, but direct communication regarding coursework, academic standing, and administrative tasks now happens exclusively between the student and the institution.
