"Between the 1970s and the 1990s, Native and non-Native Americans came together in defense of land rights in a place many people consider to be a wasteland, the Nevada desert. Based on five years of research across the Desert Southwest, including oral history interviews begun in Summer 2026 funded by the University of Alaska Beverly Beeton Award, this presentation tells the intertwined stories of two grassroots organizations that mobilized against militarization, mining, and other destructive land uses in the Great Basin: the Western Shoshone Sacred Lands Association and Citizen Alert. Throughout the 1980s, they collaborated on protests at the Nevada Test Site in what some outsiders labeled an "unlikely alliance," particularly when conservative ranchers who called themselves "Sagebrush Rebels" joined in their coalition. But were they all that "unlikely?" The presentation concludes by suggesting that if we understand their work as a natural reaction against existential threats to the lives and livelihoods of all Nevadans, then their partnership doesn't seem that unlikely after all." -Dr. Rose
