It is official the Half Shell Raw Bar is recycling our oyster shells seven days a week with Everglades Oysters. The Half Shell is taking three tons of oyster shells out of landfills each month.
So remember to vote to vote for the Half Shell Raw Bar as Best Raw Bar / Oysters at this year's Bubbas Awards. You can vote at www.keysweekly.com/bubbas26

Here are some facts on what oyster shells can be used for.

Crushed oyster shells are rich in calcium carbonate, making them an excellent soil amendment. They help neutralize acidic soil, improve nutrient absorption, and strengthen plant cell walls, preventing issues like blossom end rot in tomatoes and peppers,

Coarser shell pieces can also act as a physical barrier against pests such as slugs, snails and Key West Chickens.

Additionally, shells can be used to create garden paths or borders, adding both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Oyster shells are commonly used in poultry farming as a calcium supplement. Crushed shells provide hens with the calcium needed for strong eggshells, and birds can self-regulate their intake based on their laying cycle.

They can also be mixed with vinegar to create a homemade calcium supplement for other livestock.

Recycled oyster shells play a crucial role in oyster reef restoration. When returned to coastal waters, they provide a substrate for oyster larvae (spat) to settle, helping rebuild reefs that filter water, support marine biodiversity, and protect shorelines from erosion. This process enhances water quality and strengthens coastal ecosystems.

Oyster shells can be transformed into decorative items such as candle holders, vases, wreaths, mirrors, lamps, and jewelry.
Their natural shapes and iridescent interiors make them ideal
for coastal-themed decorations or unique DIY projects. They can also be polished and used to create wind chimes, chandeliers, or small planters for succulents.

Processed oyster shells can be incorporated into concrete or other building materials, providing a sustainable alternative to traditional aggregates and reducing environmental impact.

Crushed shells can also be used in eco-friendly alternatives to plastic, such as biodegradable utensils or packaging materials
By repurposing oyster shells, you can support sustainability, enhance gardens, improve animal health, and create beautiful decor, making them a versatile and eco-friendly resource.
