Raising Lights

So many times we focus on all the things we could be doing better as parents. At a networking event I was asked a really great question as a Parent Coach. “What is the most common mistake you see in your clients when it comes to their parenting?” It was so good I felt excited just thinking about my answer.

My answer: Parents do not give themselves enough credit for what they’re doing right. We’re so focused on what we could be doing better you miss all the opportunities to celebrate your wins. For some this is actually how they were parented constantly being corrected or criticized so much to the point when they were praised for doing something great they couldn’t even celebrate it.

The greatest lesson here is that we as parents can choose different. We can anchor into our experiences, reflect and choose a different response. Sometimes we get it and sometimes we don’t. The goal is never to get to a state of perfect parenting. Our journey in life alongside our children is what being a parent is. Presence, availability, connection, and choices.

September is Su***de Awareness

Really try to have those check ins with your friends and family on a mental and emotional level. Everyone is dealing with something they tell no one about. Sometimes it’s the fear of being misunderstood, looked down on, or found weak. There is strength in reaching out. Having the courage to voice that you need help is admirable. Don’t suffer in silence, there are more people who can relate to you than you know, just reach out.

I personally want to send love to those who have attempted su***de, those who have made plans, and those who love someone who is suicidal. I’m glad you’re here, and you’re not alone. No judgement, no expectations, just a space to ease a mental burden if you have it. Many fathers feel a strong duty to supply money and a secure home. The weight of being responsible for a family can cause an unbearable amount of stress and worry even for those who had great role models available and even more for those who didn’t.
