Eye Strain Safety Tips: 20-20-20 Rule for Digital Screens
1. Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
- Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
- Regularly shifting your focus gives your eye muscles a break from prolonged close-up screen work.
2. Remember to Blink
- Make a conscious effort to blink regularly while using computers, tablets, and phones.
- People tend to blink less when looking at screens, which can contribute to dry, irritated, or tired eyes.
3. Position Your Monitor Properly
- Keep your screen about an arm’s length away, with the top of the monitor at or slightly below eye level.
- Proper positioning can reduce eye fatigue as well as unnecessary neck and shoulder strain.
4. Reduce Screen Glare
- Adjust blinds, overhead lighting, or your monitor’s position to minimize reflections and glare.
- Excessive glare makes your eyes work harder to see the screen clearly.
5. Adjust Screen Brightness and Text Size
- Set your screen brightness to a comfortable level and increase text size when needed.
- Squinting or straining to read small or overly bright text can contribute to digital eye strain.
6. Take Breaks Away From the Screen
- Use breaks to stand, stretch, walk, or complete a task that doesn’t involve another digital device.
- Moving away from screens gives your eyes a more meaningful rest while also reducing prolonged sitting.
7. Pay Attention to Persistent Symptoms
- Don’t ignore recurring headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes, or eye discomfort.
- Persistent symptoms may indicate that your workstation or screen habits need adjustment and can be worth discussing with an eye-care professional.

Fire Extinguisher Safety Tips: Checking Gauges & Inspection Dates
1. Check the Pressure Gauge
- Make sure the gauge needle is within the green operating range.
- A reading outside the proper range may indicate the extinguisher is undercharged or overcharged and may not operate correctly.
2. Inspect Extinguishers Regularly
- Include fire extinguishers in routine workplace safety inspections and follow your facility’s required inspection schedule.
- Regular checks help identify problems before an emergency occurs.
3. Check Inspection and Service Dates
- Review the inspection tag, maintenance label, and manufacturer information for required service or replacement dates.
- Fire extinguishers require periodic maintenance, and requirements vary by extinguisher type – there is not one universal expiration date for every unit.
4. Look for Physical Damage
- Check the extinguisher for dents, corrosion, leaks, a damaged hose, or other visible defects.
- Physical damage can affect the extinguisher’s reliability and ability to discharge safely.
5. Check the Pin and Tamper Seal
- Confirm that the pull pin is securely in place and the tamper seal is intact.
- A missing or broken seal may indicate the extinguisher has been used or tampered with and should be inspected.
6. Keep Extinguishers Visible and Accessible
- Never block an extinguisher with furniture, boxes, equipment, or other materials.
- During a fire, employees need to be able to locate and access the extinguisher quickly.
7. Report Problems Immediately
- If an extinguisher is damaged, discharged, missing, or has an improper pressure reading, report it and have it serviced or replaced by qualified personnel.
- A questionable extinguisher should never be relied upon during an emergency.
