Our young people working to save their and our planet.

A 17-year-old student from St. John’s is getting international attention for a water-cleanup idea that can tell plastic from aquatic life.

Moroti Adegboyega of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, has won the 2026 Stockholm Junior Water Prize for Ecoferroquatics, an autonomous platform designed to remove plastic from water using artificial intelligence, robotics and magnetic technology.

Adegboyega, who was born in Nigeria, developed a robot that uses cameras and AI to identify plastic debris, then uses a biodegradable ferrofluid and magnets to collect it. The goal is to remove plastic while recognizing and avoiding fish and other aquatic animals, reducing disturbance to the surrounding ecosystem.

Plastic pollution is a growing concern in rivers, lakes and oceans. Larger items can break down into microplastics, which are small enough to be eaten by wildlife and can move through aquatic food webs. Conventional cleanup tools such as nets, trawlers and filters can require heavy manual labour and may also capture organisms or natural materials along with debris.

In testing, Adegboyega’s system performed especially well with smaller, microplastic-scale particles that can pass through simple screening methods. The prototype is still experimental, and real waterways present added challenges such as waves, glare, plants, mud and biological debris. Adegboyega has also noted the importance of keeping the ferrofluid contained so cleanup technology does not create new environmental problems.

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize brings together young researchers from more than 40 countries and has recognized student innovation in water science since 1997. Adegboyega received the award during World Water Week in Stockholm, where H.R.H. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden presented the prize.

What youth-led water or conservation projects are happening in your community?

Wastewater treatment is essential for public health; protecting our waterways; and water recycling. Using as much recycled water as possible with nature based solutions, discharging the water on land to help grow things that photosynthesize and drawdown carbon and sequester it in the soil, is critical to reversing global warming and building carbon in the soil to hold more water in our soil and help prevent fires.
Since being elected Director, Central Contra Costa Sanitary District (Central San) in 2006 (President 2009, 2015, 2020 and 2025),, Mike McGill's focus has been to assure that Central San provides high quality services; with fair fees and minimizing costs to ratepayers; protecting our environment; and reusing precious resources, such as using agricultural recycled water for urban farming.
On the Central San Board, Mike is the primary proponent of creative uses of recycled water such as the CoCo San Sustainable Farm on Central San land using recycled water to: grow fresh produce for schools and the Food Bank; teach hands-on science, technology, engineering and math for students; demonstrate environmental protection; and foster economic development and job training.
