Sales tax as plan to lower property taxes…….

On Nov. 4, Coweta County voters will decide whether to swap paying a portion of their property taxes for a new 1 percent sales tax.

The November ballot will include a proposed floating local option sales tax, or FLOST, so named because it was part of legislation that created a “floating homestead exemption” that limits assessed values of homesteaded properties to the rate of inflation. The sales tax would be in force for five years.

County residents approved the floating homestead exemption in 2024, and the municipalities and the county enacted it, giving them the option of including FLOST on the ballot.
