We were never promised "happily ever after." Somewhere along the way we started expecting it anyway.

So when the marriage gets hard, when the diagnosis comes, when the career doesn't turn out how we planned, we feel cheated, as if a contract has been broken. It hasn't. That contract never existed.

What Scripture actually offers is better and harder: satisfaction, fulfillment, purpose. Not the absence of trouble. Something durable in the middle of it.

Job got there. It cost him everything first.
