Atlantic City’s Steel Pier, one of the most recognizable landmarks at the Jersey Shore, has been listed for sale for $85 million.

The five-acre oceanfront property sits across from Hard Rock Hotel + Casino on the Atlantic City Boardwalk and includes a built-in helipad, riparian rights and prior approvals for a condo-hotel entertainment complex.

It opened in 1898 as a theater but was expanded to include rides, exhibits and other attractions, earning it the nickname, the “Showplace of the Nation” and stretched nearly 2,300 feet at its peak.

Today, the pier measures 150 feet wide and 965 feet long, with a perpetual riparian grant allowing it to extend up to 2,850 feet into the Atlantic Ocean.

The front building, including a sky bridge and roof, totals approximately 40,000 square feet.

The property is currently operated as an amusement park. But its zoning supports hotel, entertainment and commercial redevelopment.

Trump Entertainment Resorts owned the Steel Pier in the late 1980s, acquiring it as part of his ownership of the adjacent Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort. Trump listed it for auction in June 2011 but before the auction could take place the Catanoso family, who long operated rides on the pier, bought it for $4.25 million in August 2011.
