Hollows - Ghost Chorus (2008)

Philadelphia hardcore fronted by the icon Kevin Hare who I saw a couple of different times. Once in a York, PA basement and another time at This Is Hardcore. I used to jokingly say that this was a Hopesfall tribute band, but I don’t remember what the actual joke was. Still, I stand by it.

I thought this was a demo, but it’s got a title, so we’ll call it an EP. It’s packaged as a demo though so I’ll let the government make the official decision.

I’m sure members went on to do many bands, but the only one I know of for sure is the excellent False Salvation. Go listen to that!

Solid State Records - Spring/Summer Sampler 2003

I guess the leader of Christian metalcore merchants didn’t have a lot going on in 2003. A four song sampler? Pretty weak for the era when these things were packed full of tracks.

Aside from Figure Four, nothing on this was on my radar. I was aware of Beloved, but they were too… not for me. I remember The Agony Scene as well, but not The Death Campaign.

Abacus Recordings Sampler (2003?)

This was short lived sub-label of Century Media Records. I think the idea was to release hardcore and metalcore records. They put out a handful of decent bands, but the only few I see on this sampler are Heaven Shall Burn, All Else Failed, and I had a big soft spot for Haste.

They did also release records for Sick Of It All, Ignite, and Righteous Jams, but none of them are featured here.

Mostly they put out second or even third rate metalcore as evidenced by this collection.

Drawing Dead - Lock It Up (2006)

If I remember correctly, this hardcore band was based out of Philly. I interviewed whoever the singer was for a zine I started and never finished called Crap Rag.

This is the most DIY packaging I’ve ever seen for a CD release. Kinda sucks but I gotta respect it. The songs hold up pretty decently as well. I wonder which bands the members from this one went on to form. There are no names listed so I can’t look it up.

Victory Records Sampler 2003(?)

This one is focused on the A Perfect Murder “Unbroken” album. Which I really liked by the way. I only remember seeing them at Hellfest ‘04, but I imagine I saw them elsewhere too. This LP was the only thing they did that stuck with me, but maybe I’m misremembering. I’m very unsure apparently.

Though I am positive that the A18 track on this is stupendous. In fact, that whole “Dear Furious” record is one of my favorites of the era. Martyr AD and Scars Of Tomorrow were metalcore bands I didn’t care much for. I tried though!

Bring It On - Payback (DFF Records 2003)

This will be the last of the DFF discography and it might be my favorite. Hard hitting Baltimore hardcore. Kind of simple, but sometimes that’s the best.

Interesting that Bring It On was the last band released on the DFF label and the first on A389 Records.

Sportswear - Building, Dwelling, Thinking (Supersoul Records 1999)

Anyone who has ever heard of this band is immediately ready to diss on their name. Anyone who has ever heard this band, is probably ready to forgive them for it. That is if the listener likes youth crew hardcore.

These guys were from Norway and despite being a good band, have never torched a church. Ray Cappo has his hands all over this one and you can tell. Not a complaint. Though I admit, the coolest part to me is that the address on the back cover for Supersoul Records, is for Lancaster, PA. It somehow always comes back to here. Though I believe that was because CI Records was the distributor for the label.

Anyway, if the band name has always been a barrier for you, I’d suggest giving them a shot if you like Youth Of Today, Bold, Mindset, etc

Lifeless - Demo 2010

I guess this is more of a promo than a demo. Whatever. All Lifeless, once they solidified this lineup, was immaculate heavy metallic hardcore.

I’d say these songs are where they really found their sound, but it is the “Dream” LP where they knocked it out of the park. Anyway the “NLFTW” record that followed this demo was part of a brief Harvcore Records revival that brought a lot of cool records to the region.

Faceoff - Demo 2005

These guys were at seemingly every PAHC show for a long time. If they weren’t playing, they were in the crowd. Of course, sometimes both.

I am shocked at how bad the recording quality of this demo is. I did not remember it that way. Regardless, they are a band I remember fondly, even if the tracks aren’t there.
