After The Storm
When disaster strikes it hits the whole community. Together we can rebuild, After The Storm!
After the Storm is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization launched by the Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church in 2022. We launched in response to a flood in Detroit and Southeast Michigan. That same year, we also responded to a tornado in Ga***rd, working with more than 100 families to rebuild and recover. The Conference quickly became the expert in long-term disaster response and recovery in Michigan, trusted by federal, state, and local partners. We felt the best way to sustain this expertise was to form an independent organization. We work with people and organizations of any religious persuasion and all donations are tax deductible. Before that, the Michigan Conference had assisted with long-term disaster recovery projects from Houghton/Hancock to the Great Lakes Bay region, including recovery from a major dam breach in Midland.

Many homes have loose and insecure internal and external railings, inviting safety risks to our most vulnerable residents. After the Storm is proud to provide these repairs and replacements whenever possible. Thank you to our Disaster Case Managers and project managers for asking the right questions to our survivors so that this need no longer remains unmet.

Teams that collaborate are able to stay on their tasks 64% longer than those that work alone. Team-building activities increase communication, trust, and productivity. Our small but mighty team has put in countless hours, and our leadership team and board of directors coordinated a day at the game to bring us all closer together.
We are our best when we work (and play) together. Thank you again to our staff, partners, and leaders for this refresh and reset.

"Joining ATS as a Review Specialist was not a career pivot that I saw coming, but it's been a really wonderful shift and I'm forever grateful for the opportunity to support the work that our organization centers. I love being in a role that sees all of the dedication and hard work that our staff puts into Disaster Case Management, and I love getting to witness all the ways that we connect Survivors to resources and facilitate recoveries that may have seemed unobtainable in the aftermath of their disaster. "Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12
These youth volunteers are showing up in a major way in Union City. We are so thankful for the Marshall United Methodist Church adult chaperones for dedicating their time, energy and resources tackling through debris removal. When we educate the youth to pour into their neighborhoods, we build a community that supports and uplifts each other.

Here is a great resource for any small business owners! After that amazing SBA workshop yesterday- here is a next step you can take!
🚨 If Metro Detroit experienced a major blackout today, would your business be ready?
No lights, no internet. Payment systems down. Refrigeration interrupted. Security systems affected, employees and customers onsite. Phones losing power. What’s your plan?
Severe storms, flooding, power outages and other emergencies can disrupt a small business with little warning. The question isn’t simply whether an emergency could happen—it’s whether you and your team know what to do when it does.
Join us THIS FRIDAY, August 21, for our Small Business Disaster Preparedness Workshop, led by a certified Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) instructor.
Business owners and entrepreneurs will learn practical, FEMA-supported preparedness principles and how to apply them to their businesses, employees and facilities.
You’ll learn how to:
⚡ Prepare for extended power outages, severe storms and flooding
🔥 Respond to fires, including hands-on fire extinguisher practice
🩹 Handle basic medical emergencies, including bleeding control and common injuries
🚨 Identify workplace risks and establish emergency response roles
🏪 Protect employees, customers and business operations during an emergency
Don’t wait until the lights go out, the water comes in or your systems go down to figure out your emergency plan.
