Registered Apprenticeships open doors to career paths Michiganders can continue building on.
Kayla started as an Early Childhood Education registered apprentice at Shining Star Pre-School. Today, she has earned two industry-recognized credentials and is continuing her training with a goal of becoming a director at the pre-school.

Her journey shows what workforce development can make possible: hands-on experience, credentials that support career advancement and resources to help overcome barriers along the way.

This Workforce Development Month, we’re celebrating Kayla and Michiganders across the state who are gaining the skills and support they need to build brighter futures.

Earlier this month, 100 students who are blind/low vision completed the after months of training. The five-mile walk was a true test of using their cane techniques, trust and gaining a sense of independence.

Cody first came to Michigan Rehabilitation Services in August 2025 with the goal of obtaining full-time employment. From the beginning, Cody was motivated, cooperative and actively engaged in the vocational rehabilitation process.

Through his persistence and dedication, Cody attended several job interviews and maintained excellent communication with his MRS counselor. Together, they were able to prepare for each of Cody’s interviews in advance, ensuring he was well-prepared.

Today, Cody continues to work as a custodian at an elementary school, where he plans to remain. His coworkers have become like family to him, making his workplace a supportive and welcoming environment.
