How could you not?!
Old folklore warned that music heard deep in the woods did not always belong to human hands. A melody drifting between the trees after dusk could signal a fae gathering, a hidden procession or a doorway into the Otherworld opening where no doorway had stood before.
The music was said to be impossibly beautiful. It could make a traveller forget the cold, the fading daylight and the path beneath their feet. Those who followed might discover a circle of dancing figures beneath the moon or a feast glowing between ancient trees. They could believe they had stayed for only a song, only to return and find that years had passed beyond the forest.
Other stories warned that the music would keep moving as you approached. It would draw you beyond familiar paths, across streams and deeper into the trees until you could no longer remember which direction led home. Calling out, accepting food or stepping into the dancers’ circle could bind a person to the gathering.
These tales offered practical warnings too. Forests become disorientating after dark, especially when autumn fog settles and fallen leaves conceal the paths. Music carried by wind or water can seem much closer than its true source.
So if an unknown melody reaches you among the autumn trees, admire it from where you stand. Do not answer it. Do not search for the musicians. Turn your coat inside out, carry iron if tradition comforts you and return by the path you already know.
Not every song is an invitation meant for human ears.
