I recently attended a DEA **Fentanyl Free America** training led by **Cheri Oz, Assistant Administrator of the DEA Diversion Control Division**, and one topic really stood out to me.

The DEA shared how emojis are being used on social media to market and access illicit drugs, including counterfeit pills that may contain fentanyl.

What surprised me most was that many healthcare professionals and providers I spoke with were not aware this was happening.

As a pharmacist, I believe this is something we all need to understand and discuss more openly with parents, caregivers, educators, and patients.

A young person may think they are ordering a pill online, but that pill may be counterfeit — and potentially deadly.

**One pill can kill.**

And this issue is not only about the supply. It is also about the demand.

As long as there is demand, dangerous supply chains will continue finding ways to reach young people — including through social media, coded language, and emojis. Prevention has to start with awareness, education, and honest conversations before a tragedy happens.
