The Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS) is a non-profit, animal-welfare organization in Lansing, MI. More than 10,000 animals come through our doors each year.
At the Capital Area Humane Society, we are passionate about animals. Our wide variety of programs and services exist to serve the pets and people of Mid-Michigan. We have an excellent staff of nearly 40 animal lovers who see each adoption as a victory. More than 2,500 volunteers devote 32,000+ hours of time each year to ensure our animals are properly socialized, exercised, and loved. The shelter receives no tax dollars or government funding and relies on the generosity of donors to help us provide love, food, shelter, and medical care to homeless and abandoned pets. We are a local, private, and independent animal welfare organization founded in Lansing in 1936 and all donations and gifts directed to the CAHS are used to assist the animals in the greater Lansing community. Three adoptions today!
We’re celebrating three wonderful shelter animals who found their forever homes today. Each adoption represents a new beginning, a loving family, and a future filled with hope.
We’re so grateful to the families who opened their hearts and homes, and to everyone who supports our shelter and helps make happy endings like these possible.

Shoshanna had her moment in the spotlight when she helped Meteorologist Katie Nickolaou with the Friday Furcast, and we couldn’t have been happier to see her show off her sweet personality!
But we have even better news… Shoshanna has been ADOPTED!
From helping with the forecast to finding her forever home, Shoshanna’s story is exactly what we hope for every shelter pet. We are so happy she found the loving family she was waiting for.
Congratulations, Shoshanna! We can’t wait to see all the wonderful adventures ahead.

We are thrilled to share that four very special cats found their forever homes today. Four new families, four new beginnings, and so much love waiting for each of them!

For Ruckus, hope is more than a word. Hope is the person who sees him, believes in him, and gives him the chance to finally know what it feels like to be home.
This handsome 3-year-old, 75-pound guy has been waiting since July 18 for someone to see the sweet heart behind his big personality. And now, he’s hoping his wait is almost over.
Ruckus may take a little time to get to know you, but once he trusts you, you’ll discover a big-hearted boy who loves rump scratches, playing with his favorite toys, and showing off the commands he already knows, like “sit” and “down.”
More than anything, Ruckus is looking for someone who will be patient with him, give him the time he needs to build a bond, and help him feel safe and loved. He may do best with older children who can respect his space, and we ask that all family members meet him before adoption.
Ruckus may be able to live with another dog with a gradual, thoughtful introduction, and a meet and greet with any resident dogs is required before adoption. He would prefer a home without cats.
He’s ready to leave the shelter behind. He just needs someone to open the door.
Be his hope. Be his home.

Thankful Thursday!
Today, we want to shine a spotlight on one of our longtime supporters, Doggy Daycare and Spa!
For many, many years, Doggy Daycare and Spa has been a HUGE supporter of CAHS and the pets we serve. Their generosity has taken so many forms, from sponsoring our events and hosting fundraisers to helping our shelter dogs who are in extra need of a little pampering.
Sometimes a good grooming session can make all the difference for a shelter pet. It helps them feel more comfortable, look their best, and, most importantly, feel a little extra special while they wait for their forever home.
We are incredibly grateful for the years of support, kindness, and love Doggy Daycare and Spa has shown our organization and the animals in our care. We are so fortunate to have community partners who continue to stand behind shelter pets and the work we do.

Happy Tails, Izzy!

Izzy would like everyone to know that she has been extremely busy since finding her forever home.
Eleven pairs of shoes. EIGHT remotes. Nine chargers. An impressive collection of Mom’s clothes. Three books. Three lamps. At least 30 containers and plastic cups. Roughly 50 rolls of toilet paper. And approximately 300 cat toys.
And honestly? She has zero regrets.
Her family knew Izzy’s quirks and challenges well because they first welcomed her as a foster. They knew she had some confidence to build, and Izzy has absolutely risen to the occasion.
Today, she LOVES her cat and dog siblings, hanging out with Mom, chest scratches, going for walks, and making new friends. New people can still be a little scary, but instead of running and hiding, Izzy is learning to stick around long enough to discover that maybe humans aren't so bad after all.
And when she gets REALLY excited? Well… let's just say her wiggly butt has a mind of its own. Her tail repeatedly smacks her in the face, and she has apparently not yet discovered the off switch.
Her favorite thing? Watching Izzy gain confidence and seeing how excited she gets when she finally decides a new person is a friend.
From a scared girl who needed time, patience, and understanding to a happy pup who is living her best life, with a few missing shoes along the way.

We had a wonderful Wednesday here at the shelter. Ten furry besties are snuggled up with their new families tonight.

When Precious arrived at CAHS, it was hard to see the dog underneath all that fur.
She was covered in painful, tangled, heavy mats. Once she was shaved, we discovered something heartbreaking: the matted fur weighed almost as much as she did.
Precious came to us through no fault of her own. She needed a safe place to heal, plenty of care, and a chance to gain some much-needed weight.
She found all of that with a loving foster family. And then something beautiful happened.
Her foster family fell in love, and are officially adopting her!
Today, Precious has a new name: Betty.
Betty's story is one of second chances, and it is exactly why we Walk.
On Saturday, October 3, we'll gather at Fitzgerald Park for the Walk for the Animals. Every registration and every dollar raised helps us continue providing shelter, medical care, food, and second chances to animals who need us.
Come Walk for Betty. Walk for the animals still waiting. Walk for the ones who haven't found their families yet.
