E-mobility devices have become common-place in our communities. Unfortunately, not all "E-bikes" are actually bikes, which has led to confusion, injuries and even deaths due to the misclassification of higher powered "e-motos". I have sponsored bi-partisan legislation to clearly distinguish between E-bikes and other e-devices and also to ensure that the batteries and electrical systems in e-bikes follow safety standards to prevent fires.
Slagh spearheads bipartisan legislation to clarify e-mobility laws, protect Michigan riders State Rep. Brad Slagh today introduced bipartisan legislation to improve safety standards surrounding electric transportation devices by distinguishing traditional e-bikes from higher-powered electric mopeds and motorcycles. Michigan law currently defines three classes of electric bicycles. Class 1....

On Tuesday, the Michigan House of Representatives honored the memory of all those affected by the 9/11 atrocities. Part of the service included a well-deserved recognition of our First Responders. I was able to welcome Deputy Scott Fairfield, from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department, as my guest. I am beyond grateful for all that our men and women in law enforcement, at our local fire departments and in our armed forces do to make the United States the best country on earth.

Do you remember where you were when you heard about the first plane hitting the first tower? Do you remember how you felt when you heard about the second plane hitting? Do you remember what you thought when you saw the images of the gaping hole in the Pentagon? Do you remember the gratefulness you felt when you heard about the passengers who fought back on Flight 93 and uttered the famous words "Let's Roll"? Do you remember the sadness you felt for the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that day? Do you remember the pride you felt in the days after when everyone unfurled American Flags on their homes and businesses? Do you remember seeing President Bush on top of that debris pile using the bullhorn to provide a rallying cry to our nation?
I remember and I hope you do too!
I am truly saddened by the death of Tim Klunder. Tim and I stepped into Zeeland area community leadership around the same time, he in the City and me in the Township. I was always grateful to work with him as I knew he had the best interest of the City in mind, while still maintaining a concern for the larger community. He was a man of integrity and his death is our loss.
I was privileged to provide a written Legislative Tribute to Tim just a few short weeks ago. In it we were able to recognize his many years of service to Zeeland City, the broader community and even leadership within the State. Below is the language of the tribute:
LET IT BE KNOWN, That it is with great respect and sincere appreciation that we join in recognizing Tim Klunder on the occasion of his 25 years of dedicated service as City Manager of the City of Zeeland.
For a quarter century, Tim Klunder has served the people of Zeeland with integrity, vision, and an unwavering commitment to strengthening the community he proudly serves. Through his steady leadership and dedication to public service, he has helped shape Zeeland into a vibrant, thriving city while preserving the character and values that make it such a special place.
Tim has been instrumental in the revitalization of downtown Zeeland, championing initiatives that transformed the heart of the community through streetscape improvements, the installation of the downtown snowmelt system, the introduction of the City's first downtown liquor licenses, the hiring of the City's first Marketing Director, and the cultivation of public-private partnerships that resulted in significant mixed-use development.
His leadership has also strengthened Zeeland's economic foundation by fostering lasting relationships with local industries, supporting clean water plant expansions, and advancing critical infrastructure improvements that have enabled businesses to grow and invest in the community.
Recognizing that strong communities are built through exceptional public spaces, Tim guided transformational investments in parks and neighborhood amenities, including the expansion of Huizenga Park, the redevelopment of Hoogland Park, the creation of the Elm Street Woonerf, and the construction of the City's western gateway roundabout. His vision has enhanced the quality of life for residents while creating welcoming spaces where families, neighbors, and visitors can gather and connect.
Throughout his career, Tim has exemplified collaborative leadership, bringing together residents, businesses, community organizations, neighboring municipalities, and public agencies to advance the long-term interests of Zeeland. His thoughtful approach to governance, sound judgment, and spirit of service have earned the respect and admiration of colleagues, community leaders, and citizens alike.
IN SPECIAL TRIBUTE, Therefore, we proudly honor Tim Klunder for twenty-five years of exceptional leadership, faithful public service, and steadfast dedication to the City of Zeeland. His legacy is reflected not only in the projects completed and partnerships forged, but also in the stronger, more vibrant community he has helped build for current and future generations. May this tribute serve as an expression of our sincere gratitude and appreciation for his many contributions and as recognition of the lasting impact he has made on the City of Zeeland and the people of the State of Michigan.

Access to drinking water and water for our agricultural products is essential. As many know, due to various factors, many of our county's aquifers are not able to properly recharge, leading to numerous problems for homeowners and farmers. Earlier this year, Joe Bush, our County Water Resources Director, came to me asking for assistance in securing funding for a feasibility study to assess groundwater levels, recharge and withdrawal rates, and overall aquifer health in our area. The study will also provide recommendations, including potential managed aquifer recharge projects, stormwater capture strategies, conservation measures, and infrastructure improvements. Not only will the work Ottawa County is planning to do benefit us but it will also provide information to other counties experiencing similar issues. I'm happy to report that I was able to secure the necessary funding for this study in the budget that was recently approved.
