September 17, 2026, marks the 164th anniversary of the single bloodiest day in American history—the Battle of Antietam. Hear from Save the Flags Director Matt VanAcker, who was invited by the Michigan Army and Air National Guard (MIARNG) to accompany and participate in a staff ride of the historic battlefield.

🏛️ The Michigan State Capitol is part of a much broader story of historic preservation that spans the United States.
Capitol Historian Valerie Marvin recently interviewed Dr. Ted Ligibel, former Director of the Historic Preservation Program at Eastern Michigan University, to discuss the rise and evolution of the historic preservation movement and how Michigan’s Capitol fits within that history.

Next time you walk through the rotunda, you’ll get to see the glass floor just as it was in 1879! The last replica glass tile was put into place a few days ago, which means the rotunda restoration work is nearly finished! It’s been a long journey, but the glass floor restoration is almost complete! The last replica tile is in place and there’s just a bit of caulking and clean-up work to do before the job is finished. 📜 For , we’re taking a look inside a House of Representatives session in 1964!
By this time, several 20th-century modifications had been made to the chamber. The original rostrum had been altered to accommodate an electric voting system, massive voting boards were mounted on the front walls, and dozens of additional lightbulbs had been added to the coffered ceiling.
Today, visitors can still watch the House in session from the restored chamber.

📜 The view down Michigan Avenue has changed a lot since 1898!
The Austin Blair statue, the only monument at the Michigan State Capitol commemorating an individual, has stood watch over the east lawn for nearly 130 years.
