Recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. When you live in a reality dominated by instant gratification, it can be challenging when we don’t get the job, car, house, and recovery wife right away. Then when life starts throwing haymakers, sometimes it’s easier to throw in the towel.
But nobody said it was gonna be easy. The biggest rewards usually come after the hardest battles. Don’t sabotage your blessings for immediate relief. And those battles don’t have to be fought alone. For me, it was my faith in Jesus and relationships with my support system that made the difference.

Have you ever wondered about the history of sober living in the US? Probably not. But I still wrote this anyway. It’s interesting that sober living actually goes back nearly 200 years. With how much it has grown over the last decade, I think it’s important to learn from the past.

The History of Sober Living and Recovery Housing Sober living goes back almost 200 years in the US and has evolved considerably. This is a brief history of key events that played a role in its development.

Today is the day we honor, celebrate, remember, and spread awareness to those who have lost their battle to addiction. One thing that has not changed no matter how long I have stayed sober is the relief of going to bed clear-headed. I can not take for granted the “blessing of stressing” about what time I have to get up for work or take my daughter to school. It’s nothing compared to the worry of whether the cops will show up at 3 AM for a probation warrant, or what scheme I have to create to get money in the morning. Any 24 hour period without putting poison in my body is a win.

I still look at this message once in a while. It was from my buddy, Andrew. He sent this 1 day before he overdosed, which he eventually passed away from. He was so right about this. Melody started 10th grade last week. It goes fast, just like life. It’s hard to believe it’s been over 8 years since Andrew passed. But I remember telling his Mom that I would always keep his memory alive in my recovery and that has happened. I know Andrew is walking around heavenly beaches somewhere right now.

Imagine going to treatment and the place gets raided by the feds. This happened in Detroit.

My parents are moving and I’m going through a bunch of stuff I have there. I came across this trophy from one of my proudest moments, when I won MVP for my high school baseball team. You can notice a big piece broken off. It was shortly after this trophy when I started using drugs and alcohol. Within a few years I was out of school and sports.
I remember one day being so angry at myself for what I had done to my life, I threw this trophy against a wall. I felt like the person I was before drugs was gone. I couldn’t stand to even look at it.
I share this because it exemplifies how drugs destroy. They don’t just keep you enslaved, they erase you. That doesn’t have to be the end, though. The positive out of everything is that recovery is possible. And thanks to God, everything I went through has enabled me to become a person that I never would’ve become without recovery. I wouldn’t change who I am today for anything.

I received this email from the Ingham County Health Department about a recent spike in overdoses over a 4 day period. Thankfully these were non fatal. If there is life, there is hope. I, personally, would not be here today if it weren’t for Naloxone. It saved my life, so I am super passionate about it. There is Narcan available for free at many places. We have a box at Pinnacle that people can access if they want to carry some. Last thing I want to add is if you are in active use, please test your stuff first. Narcan has limits and it won’t reverse the effects of Xylazine. The best choice you can make, though, is to reach out for help. Treatment is available 🙏
