Today, at approximately 4:24 a.m., officers with the Lansing Police Department were dispatched to the 600 block of E. Jolly Road after receiving a 911 call about a man armed with a handgun who was banging on doors and windows.
When officers arrived, they encountered a man who was holding a gun to his head. Officers began speaking with him and, after several minutes of negotiations, the man threatened to shoot himself or officers.
Officers then attempted to use less-lethal force and deployed a Taser. The man ran from officers before turning around and pointing his fi***rm at them. At that point, an officer-involved shooting occurred.
Officers secured the man and immediately began rendering first aid. The Lansing Fire Department also responded and provided medical treatment. The man was ultimately pronounced deceased. A fi***rm was recovered at the scene. The deceased has been identified as a 29-year-old male.
The 7 Lansing Police officers involved in the incident have not been injured and are on administrative leave, consistent with department policy.
Per Lansing Police Department policy, the investigation into the officer-involved shooting has been turned over to the Michigan State Police. MSP has possession of the evidence related to the investigation and will determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
As we typically do following a critical incident, the Lansing Police Department intends to release relevant video footage at a later date when appropriate. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

One of the cool parts about working at LPD is getting to go on cool work trips like the one Officer Fearnow recently took to St. Louis for the International Association for Identification conference.
Sounds boring? Far from it.
While there, he attended lectures on crime scene processing, courtroom testimony, bloodstain pattern analysis, case reviews, latent print development, and stress management.
He also submitted two photos for a photo contest, one of which got second place in the forensic category.
All that, plus meeting with vendors and manufacturers of the most state-of-the-art forensic equipment, which we can now work to bring to Lansing to keep more people safe and solve more crimes.
Great job, Officer Fearnow!
