In June, the State Board of Education formed the bipartisan Special Education Committee to identify strategies and best practices that support student success, strengthen partnerships with districts and families, and help ensure students with disabilities receive the services, supports and opportunities they deserve.
Students, families, educators, advocates, school districts, service providers and community stakeholders from are invited to fill out the Michigan State Board of Education Special Education Committee Engagement Opportunities form.
The form provides an opportunity to share what they want the committee to know, indicate how they would like to participate and sign up to receive information about committee meetings, listening sessions, district visits and other opportunities to engage.

Direct care workers provide essential support to Michiganders every day. They deserve wages that reflect the importance of the work they do.
Michigan must continue investing in the direct care workforce.

Say hello to Karen Wang, Transition Trainer. Karen is passionate about young adults with disabilities working toward their goals and building lives they want.
In addition to creating meaningful learning opportunities for students and families, Karen also serves as the go-to resource for our Parent Mentors on transition to adulthood topics, and is a member of Michigan Rehabilitation Council (MRC) and Michigan’s Interagency Transition Team (MITT).
One thing Karen really loves about Michigan Alliance for Families is that her colleagues are all people with disabilities or family members of people with disabilities. Everyone here has personal experience with special education and finding the best resources for their own families, and we share that information with other families statewide.
Throughout the year, get to know our team members who use their lived experience navigating special education to support families across Michigan every day as we celebrate twenty years of special education mentoring.
