During the month of October, we're celebrating LGBTQIA+ History Month and honoring the equal protections under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. The Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ELCRA) originally passed in 1976 and signed into law on January 13, 1977 and prohibits discrimination based on gender, identity, or expression in employment, housing, education, and places of public accommodations and public service. On March 16, 2023 the law was updated, explicitly codifying protections for sexual orientation and gender identity or expression.

During Mental Illness Awareness Week, MDCR is reminding every Michigander that we understand the importance of ensuring people living with mental health conditions are treated fairly and without discrimination.
Mental health conditions may qualify as disabilities under the Persons with Disabilities Civil Rights Act (PWDCRA) of 1976: which can provide protections against discrimination in areas like employment, housing, and public accommodations.
If you believe you have experienced discrimination because of a disability, including a qualifying mental health condition, contact MDCR at Michigan.gov/mdcr or 800-482-3604.
