The motif on this floor is completed by the setting contractor, not by the factory.
Each tile carries an octagon and four black corners. The small square that gives the pattern its name only forms where four tiles meet, which means the drawing depends entirely on how accurately the field is set out. An origin point a few millimetres out of square propagates across the whole floor, and every intersection in the space displays the error.
On a commercial job this is discovered at handover, when the correction cost is the full floor plus the closure to lay it.
Build it into the package: issue a setting-out drawing with the origin point, the direction of the run and the tolerance, and reference it in the finishes schedule rather than leaving it to the tile note. One extra sheet removes the most expensive variable on the floor.

A new venue has to feel established on opening night.
That is a real brief, and most of the budget aimed at it goes into things that read as decoration — reclaimed timber, aged mirror, vintage lighting. It works from across the room and falls apart up close, because everything in the space is genuinely the same age.
A black and white octagon floor solves it from underneath. It has been the floor of bistros, pharmacies and lobbies since the 1800s, so guests read the room as continuous with something older without being able to say why. It also means the operator can rebrand the walls repeatedly without the floor ever dating.
One thing to draw rather than leave to site: pale grout, matched to the white. Dark grout turns a heritage floor into a graphic one, and the effect you specified disappears.

The fireplace is already the room's natural focal point. Wrapping it in green cement tile gives the architecture color, texture and a handcrafted finish while keeping the palette warm and grounded.

Swipe: a bistro, a hotel lobby, a boutique.
Heavy traffic is where printed and cement tile stop being comparable. On a printed tile the pattern sits on the surface, so wear at the door takes the pattern with it. In cement tile the pigment is pressed through the body of the piece — the drawing runs several millimetres deep and wear exposes more of the same colour rather than removing it.
That is why these floors are still in service in buildings from the 1800s, and why an entrance that takes a thousand pairs of shoes a day is the application that suits them best rather than the one to avoid.
Worth applying at concept stage: put the cement tile where the traffic actually is. The instinct is to protect it in low-traffic areas and use something tougher-looking at the door. With this material that logic runs backwards.

A rich blue wall creates a quiet focal point without asking the rest of the room to compete. The natural variation of handmade cement tile adds softness and depth that a perfectly uniform surface cannot.

The setting-out drawing matters more than the tile selection on this one.
The tile is seven navy stripes corner to corner and nothing else, so the pattern does not exist until the pieces are oriented. Run them all the same way and you get a continuous diagonal. Alternate them and you get diamonds. Quarter-turn them in pairs and you get a basket. Four different floors, one product code, and no drawing on the package to say which one you specified.
On a commercial job that gap gets filled by the setting contractor, usually with whatever is quickest to lay out from the datum. It is discovered at handover, when the correction cost is the whole floor.
Build this into the package: issue a setting-out drawing showing tile orientation, the origin point and the direction of the run, and reference it in the finishes schedule rather than leaving orientation to the tile note. It is one extra sheet and it removes the most expensive variable on the floor.

The mudroom works hard, so its floor should bring both durability and character. This blue medallion pattern turns a practical entry into a space that feels intentional from the moment you walk in.

When the envelope has to stay cheap, the floor is where the character has to come from.
It is the ordinary condition on most hospitality fit-outs. The shell is plasterboard and paint, the joinery budget got cut in value engineering, and the scheme still has to look like something. Spreading a thin budget across walls, lighting and millwork gives you a room where nothing is quite finished.
A high-contrast floor concentrates it instead. Navy on white at this line density carries a plain white envelope on its own, which means the walls can stay painted plasterboard and the joinery can stay simple without the space reading as unfinished. One package does the work of three.
One thing to draw rather than leave to site: keep the grout pale and matched to the white of the tile. A dark grout introduces a second grid over the stripes and the floor stops reading as a field and starts reading as noise — visible in every photograph of the space thereafter.

A patterned floor can define an outdoor dining area without adding walls or changing the architecture. The black, white and grey palette creates movement while staying easy to pair with warm wood and natural stone.

Swipe: a lobby, a dining room, a bar.
Fine-lined tile changes character with viewing distance, and in a commercial space you control that distance through the plan. At two metres the floor reads as crisp geometry. At fifteen the lines merge and it reads as a woven texture. A lobby gives you both readings at once — texture from the door, geometry at the desk — and that is what keeps a large floor from feeling like a printed sheet.
It also does something useful across a building. These three spaces have different ceiling heights, different light and different dwell times, and the same tile reads differently in each without becoming a different material. You get variety across the guest journey out of a single product, one attic stock and one procurement line.
Worth applying at concept stage: test any fine-lined floor at the actual sightlines from your plan, not on a sample board. The board is a two-metre reading of a floor most people will only ever see from ten.
