The phrase "high conflict" has an important place in family proceedings.

But it should never become the starting point.
Before a case is described as "high conflict", professionals should be asking whether there is evidence of domestic abuse, coercive control or a pattern of behaviour that has created an unequal dynamic between the parents.

Conflict and abuse are not the same thing.
Conflict generally involves two people contributing to a dispute.

Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour designed to dominate, isolate, intimidate or control another person.

Those are very different dynamics, and confusing one for the other can have significant consequences for both survivors and children.

This isn't about suggesting every "high conflict" case involves domestic abuse. It's about recognising that the label should never replace a thorough assessment of the family dynamics.

Getting that distinction right matters because it shapes how risk is understood, how safeguarding concerns are assessed, and ultimately, the decisions that affect children's lives.
