Serving Leaders Keep Their People Informed

Communicating important information openly and honestly is a vital responsibility of leadership. Effective Serving leaders do not keep their people in the dark, instead, they provide their followers with the information they need to understand and accomplish their duties and responsibilities.

Wise leaders recognize that information is a stewardship. They do not use information to control people, instead they share information to equip, encourage, and unite those they lead. The lack of communication often creates confusion and mistrust. On the other hand, wise communication helps build confidence, unity, and commitment.

Biblical Foundations

“For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” Romans 12:3 (NIV)

"Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:6 (NIV)

When Leaders Communicate Effectively, Several Positive Things Happen:

1. People Feel Valued and Respected: Sharing information communicates, "You are important. Your role matters. You are part of the team."
2. People Become More Engaged: People are more committed when they understand the reasons behind decisions.
3. Problems Are Identified and Solved Faster: Open communication allows concerns to surface before they become major issues.
4. Fear and Anxiety Are Reduced: Uncertainty creates fear and confusion. Clear communication provides understanding and stability.

Negative Consequences When Leaders Fail to Keep People Informed

1. Mistrust Develops: When leaders withhold important information, people may begin to wonder: "Why were we not told?” "Is something being hidden?” "Can we trust our leaders?"
2. Rumors and Confusion Spread: When people do not receive timely and accurate information from leaders, they often fill the information gap with assumptions. This can lead to gossip, division, fear, and even resistance.
3. People Feel Disconnected From the organization: If leaders make decisions without explaining the purpose behind them, people may feel like they are simply carrying out orders rather than being an integral part of God’s purpose and plan.
4. Morale and Enthusiasm Declines: People become discouraged when they feel excluded from important information or unaware of significant issues affecting them.
5. Leaders Lose Influence: Leadership depends on credibility. When people repeatedly experience poor communication, they may stop trusting the leader's judgment and become less willing to follow.

Practical Ways Christian Leaders Can Keep People Informed

1. Communicate Regularly: Remind people why your organization exists and where God is leading. Healthy leaders and organizations welcome feedback and discussion.
2. Explain the "Why" Behind Decisions: People are more supportive when they understand the reasons behind actions.
3. Share Challenges Honestly: Leaders do not need to create fear, but they should not hide important challenges and troubling problems from those they lead.
4. Communicate Before Rumors Begin: Do not allow gossip and rumors to become the primary source of information.
5. Create Opportunities for Questions: Healthy leaders welcome feedback and discussion.

Leaders are called to be faithful stewards of both God's mission and the people entrusted to their care. Sharing important information is not simply a leadership technique—it is an expression of love, respect, and responsibility.

Serving leaders who lead, love, and serve like Jesus do not merely tell people what to do; they help people understand why they are doing it and how they fit into God's greater purpose.

Questions to Consider:

1. Why do you think people are more willing to follow leaders who communicate openly and honestly?

2. Have you ever experienced the negative effects of poor communication from a leader? What happened, and what could have been done differently?

3. What are some practical ways Christian leaders can improve communication with the people they lead?

Correcting Poor Performance

Every leader will eventually face situations that require correction. Employees, volunteers, ministry leaders, and team members will sometimes make mistakes, fail to meet expectations, demonstrate poor performance, or engage in inappropriate behavior. How a leader responds in those moments often determines whether the individual grows from the experience or becomes discouraged by it.

Many leaders avoid correction because they fear conflict. Others correct so harshly that they damage relationships and crush morale. Effective Serving leaders learn to balance truth with grace. They address problems honestly while preserving the dignity, value, and potential of the person being corrected.

Biblical Foundations:

"Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.”
Galatians 6:1 (NIV)

"Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.” Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.” Proverbs 15:1 (NIV)

Why This Leadership Skill Is Important:

Correction is necessary because:

Mistakes can hinder ministry and organizational effectiveness.
Poor behavior can negatively influence others.
Unaddressed problems often become larger problems.
People often need guidance to grow and mature.

However, correction must be delivered in a way that:

Preserves dignity.
Demonstrates respect.
Encourages growth.
Strengthens relationships.
Reflects the character of Christ.

Positive Results When Leaders Correct Without Demoralizing:

1. People Grow and Improve: Constructive correction helps people identify weaknesses and develop new skills and behaviors.
2. Trust Increases: When correction is delivered respectfully and fairly, people learn that leaders genuinely care about their success.
3. Accountability Becomes Part of the Culture: Healthy correction teaches people that accountability is a tool for growth rather than a threat.
4. Morale Remains Strong: People are more willing to receive feedback when they know they will be treated with dignity and respect.
5. Future Leaders Are Developed: Many strong leaders were shaped through constructive correction, effective coaching, and mentoring.
6. Unity Is Preserved: Problems are addressed before resentment and conflict have an opportunity to grow.

One of the most important skills Serving leaders can develop is the ability to correct poor performance or behavior without demoralizing people. Effective correction strengthens individuals, improves performance, builds trust, and preserves healthy organizational culture. Poorly handled correction, however, can discourage people, damage relationships, and weaken the mission.

Questions to Consider:

1. Why do some leaders either avoid correction or become overly harsh when correcting others?

2. How can leaders balance accountability and compassion when addressing poor performance or behavior?

3. What practical steps can leaders take to ensure that correction leads to growth rather than discouragement?

Hundreds dead and missing after flash flood hits Nepal-Tibet border - as it happened 08/28/2026

How can you come alongside our brothers and sisters in Nepal? The tragedy is overwhelming. We've watched numerous videos and heard from several pastor friends. Of eleven known churches, at least 30 believers are confirmed dead, 81 are missing and three churches are damaged. In one case only the pastor is reported alive and in another case the pastor is missing. This is a tragedy of epic proportions.

The Reverb Network can accept your donations to go toward relief efforts; we'll issue tax-deductible receipts and put every cent of each donation toward this cause. Here's the link: https://www.continuetogive.com/4938296/donation_prompt

And here's how you can pray:
1. For rescue and relief efforts to reach those who are still stranded or in need—that missing persons may be located and rescued before it’s too late.
2. Comfort for those who are grieving.
3. For pastors and church leaders in surrounding areas to have wisdom in serving these affected areas.

Being a Good Follower

One of the greatest paradoxes of Christian leadership is that effective leaders must also be effective followers. In God's Kingdom, leadership and followership are not opposites; they are complementary. Before a person can lead others well, they must first learn to follow God faithfully and submit to the authority, wisdom, and guidance he provides.

Good followers remain teachable, humble, accountable, and obedient to God. They understand that leadership is stewardship, not ownership. The best leaders never stop being followers of Jesus.

Biblical Foundations:

"Then he said to them all: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.’" Luke 9:23 (NIV)

"For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” John 6:38 (NIV)

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)

What Happens When Leaders Demonstrate They Are Also Good Followers:

1. Humility Becomes Part of the Organizational Culture: When senior leaders openly acknowledge their dependence upon God and their need for guidance, humility spreads throughout the organization.
2. Leaders Remain Teachable: Good followers recognize that they do not know everything. They remain open to learning from God, peers, and team members.
3. Accountability Is Strengthened: Leaders who willingly submit to accountability create a culture where accountability is viewed positively rather than as a threat.
4. Better Decision-Making Occurs: Leaders who seek God's guidance and listen to wise counsel often make more balanced and informed decisions.
5. Followers Have Greater Respect For Their Leaders: People are inspired when they see leaders who are submitted to Christ and accountable to others.

Practical Ways Leaders Can Remain Good Followers:

1. Follow Jesus Daily: Prioritize prayer, applying scripture, solitude, maintaining supportive relationships, and experiencing and expressive unconditional love.
2. Remain Teachable: Never assume you have learned everything there is to know.
3. Seek Wise Counsel: Invite trusted advisors to provide honest feedback.
4. Embrace Accountability: Allow others to speak truth into your life and leadership.
5. Serve Others Humbly: Remember that leadership is ultimately about serving rather than being served.
6. Stay Submitted to God's Word: Allow Scripture—not personal preference—to guide decisions and actions.

Serving leaders who lead, love, and serve like Jesus never stop being followers. They recognize that their authority comes from God and that they remain accountable to him. Churches and organizations thrive when leaders demonstrate humility, teachability, obedience, and a willingness to follow Christ wholeheartedly.

Questions to Consider:

1. Why do you think some leaders struggle to remain followers after attaining positions of authority?

2. How does a leader's willingness to follow Christ and receive counsel affect the health of a church or organization?

3. What practical steps can leaders take to remain humble, teachable, and accountable throughout their leadership journey?

Staying Connected to the Source

Leadership can be both rewarding and demanding. Christian leaders face countless decisions, pressures, challenges, and responsibilities. While leadership skills, experience, and education are valuable, none of these can replace the leader's need to remain connected to Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the source of our spiritual strength, wisdom, direction, and fruitfulness. Just as a branch cannot survive apart from the vine, Christian leaders cannot effectively fulfill God's calling apart from a close and ongoing relationship with Christ.

Biblical Foundations:

"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” John 15:5 (NIV)

"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5 (NIV)

Fruitful leadership flows from abiding in Christ. The effectiveness of a leader is directly connected to their relationship with Jesus.

Jesus provides:

1. Strength when leaders become weary.
2. Wisdom when leaders face difficult decisions.
3. Guidance when the path forward is unclear.
4. Peace during seasons of uncertainty.
5. Discernment when confronting challenges.
6. Spiritual power for an effective life and ministry.

A leader's greatest resource is not position, influence, knowledge, or experience—it is a having a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

What Can Happen When Leaders Fail to Stay Connected to Jesus:

1. Spiritual Drift Occurs: When leaders neglect prayer, scripture, and spending time in solitude with Jesus, their spiritual connection declines.
2. Pride Can Replace Dependence: Disconnected leaders may begin relying on their experience, position, or abilities rather than on God.
3. Poor Decisions Become More Common” Without seeking God's wisdom, leaders may rely solely on human reasoning.
4. Increased Risk of Burnout: Leaders who attempt to carry ministry burdens without drawing strength from Christ often become exhausted.
5. Moral and Ethical Vulnerability Increases: A weakening relationship with God often precedes leadership failures.
6. The Organization Suffers: When leaders become spiritually disconnected, the effects often spread throughout the church or organization.

Practical Ways Leaders Can Stay Connected to Jesus:

1. Prioritize Daily Prayer: Prayer keeps leaders connected to God's heart and guidance.
2. Spend Time in Scripture: God’s Word provides wisdom, correction, and direction.
3. Practice the Discipline of Solitude: Periods of solitude and renewal strengthen a leader's relationship with Christ.
4. Seek God Before Making Major Decisions: Invite God's guidance before developing plans or taking action.
5. Maintain Accountable Relationships: Trusted mentors, close friends, and fellow believers help leaders remain spiritually healthy.

The effectiveness of a leader is directly connected to the leader's relationship with Jesus. Serving leaders who lead, love, and serve like Jesus understand the importance of staying connected with our “Source”…Jesus Christ!

Questions to Consider:

1. Why is it easy for leaders to become so busy serving God that they neglect spending time with God?

2. What warning signs might indicate that a leader is becoming disconnected from Jesus?

3. What practical habits can help church and organizational leaders maintain a strong relationship with Christ throughout their leadership journey?

Effective Listening

One of the most overlooked yet powerful leadership skills is the ability to listen effectively. While many leaders focus on speaking, teaching, directing, and making decisions, great leaders understand that leadership begins with listening.

Serving leaders who listen well build trust, strengthen relationships, make better decisions, and create healthier churches and organizations. Conversely, leaders who fail to listen often become disconnected from their followers, make poor decisions, and create environments where people feel undervalued and ignored.

Biblical Foundations:

"My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” James 1:19 (NIV)

"To answer before listening—that is folly and shame.” Proverbs 18:13 (NIV)

"The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice.” Proverbs 12:15 (NIV)

Good Things Happen When Leaders Listen Effectively

1. Trust Increases: When followers feel heard, they feel valued and are more likely to trust their leaders.
2. Better Decisions Are Made: Followers often possess information, experiences, and insights that can improve decisions.
3. Greater Unity Develops: Even when leaders ultimately make difficult decisions, people are more likely to support those decisions when they know their voices were heard.
4. Innovation and Improvement Increase: Listening creates an environment where ideas can be shared freely.
5. Problems Are Identified Earlier: People closest to ministry or organizational challenges often recognize issues before senior leadership becomes aware of them.
6. Followers Feel Valued and Empowered: People who feel heard are more likely to engage fully and take ownership of the mission.

Biblical Example: Moses Listening to Jethro's Advice

One of the best examples of a leader benefiting from listening is Moses and his father-in-law, Jethro. In Exodus 18, Moses was personally handling every dispute among the Israelites. From morning until evening, the people waited for Moses to make decisions.
Jethro observed the situation and recognized that Moses was carrying too much responsibility.

"Moses' father-in-law replied, 'What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.’" Exodus 18:17-18 (NIV)

Jethro advised Moses to appoint and train capable leaders over groups of people and allow them to handle routine matters while Moses focused on the most important issues and responsibilities. Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. Moses' willingness to listen demonstrated humility and wisdom. Because he listened to wise counsel, both he and the nation benefited.

Practical Ways Leaders Can Become Better Listeners

1. Listen to Understand Rather Than Respond
2. Ask Clarifying Questions
3. Create Regular Feedback Opportunities
4. Avoid Becoming Defensive
5. Seek Diverse Perspectives
6. Seek God’s advice and counsel through prayer and His word

Effective listening is more than simply hearing words. It involves giving full attention, seeking understanding, valuing others' perspectives, and thoughtfully considering what is being communicated. Serving leaders must realize that God often speaks to them through other people, just like Jethro spoke to Moses. So, “be quick to listen and slow to speak.”

Questions to Consider:

1. Why do you think listening is often more difficult for leaders than speaking?

2. What are some signs that a church or organization's leaders are not effectively listening to their followers?

3. How can leaders create a culture where people feel safe sharing honest feedback and ideas?

Integrity and Leadership

Integrity is an essential quality of effective leadership. It is the foundation upon which trust, credibility, and influence are built. A Serving leader with integrity is consistent in character, truthful in speech, ethical in behavior, and faithful in fulfilling their duties. God calls leaders to model Christ-like character and serve as examples to those they lead.

Biblical Foundations:

"The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.” Proverbs 11:3 (NIV)

"In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned…"
Titus 2:7-8a (NIV)

Leaders who operate with honesty and integrity are less likely to be led astray by personal ambition, pressure, or temptation. Serving leaders are called to model integrity so that their lives reinforce their message.

Why Integrity Matters in Leadership:

Integrity connects a leader's beliefs, words, and actions. When leaders possess integrity their actions match their values, their promises match their performance, their public behavior matches their private behavior, and their followers know they can be trusted. The ability to influence others is built upon trust, and trust is built upon integrity.

What happens when Senior Leaders Lead with Integrity

1. Trust Increases Throughout the Organization
2. The Organizational Culture Becomes Healthier
3. The Credibility and Influence of Leaders Increase
4. Unity within the Organization Is Strengthened
5. The Organization's Witness Is Enhanced

Biblical Example of Integrity in Leadership: Daniel

Daniel provides one of the clearest examples of integrity in leadership.

"At this, the administrators and the satraps tried to find grounds for charges against Daniel in his conduct of government affairs, but they were unable to do so. They could find no corruption in him, because he was trustworthy and neither corrupt nor negligent.” Daniel 6:4 (NIV)

Daniel demonstrated integrity by fulfilling his responsibilities with excellence and honesty. He also refused to compromise his convictions. His enemies could find no evidence of corruption, misconduct, or negligence. Daniel's influence did not come primarily from his position; it came from his character. His integrity earned the respect of kings, coworkers, and even his enemies.

Practical Ways Leaders Can Strengthen Their Integrity

1. Align your Actions and Decisions with Biblical Values
2. Tell the Truth Consistently
3. Keep your Commitments: Do what you say you will do.
4. Welcome Accountability
5. Make Ethical Decisions even when you are under pressure
6. Practice Transparency: Communicate openly and honestly.

Integrity is the cornerstone of effective leadership. Churches and organizations flourish when leaders consistently demonstrate honesty, accountability, and faithfulness. Serving Leaders who lead, love, and serve like Jesus lead with Integrity.

Questions to Consider:

1. Why is trust considered the foundation of effective leadership, and how does integrity build that trust?

2. What are some warning signs that a leader or organization may be compromising their integrity?

3. What practical steps can church and organizational leaders take to strengthen accountability and maintain integrity over the long term?
