💡 LED vs. Laser: What does the science actually say?

When people hear “photobiomodulation,” they often assume a laser is required. But research tells a more nuanced story.

A peer-reviewed review published in Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences looked at the use of lasers and LEDs in photobiomodulation and found that LEDs can produce meaningful physiological effects without requiring laser-specific properties like coherence.

So what matters?

🔴 The wavelength of light
🔴 The amount of light reaching the tissue
🔴 How that light interacts with cellular targets such as cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria

Both lasers and LEDs can deliver therapeutic red and near-infrared wavelengths. The major difference is how the light is delivered, not necessarily whether the cells can respond to it.

And that’s one reason LED-based photobiomodulation can be so practical: it can provide broad-area coverage rather than treating one small spot at a time.

The science is still evolving, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear: photobiomodulation is about the light reaching the right biological target, not simply whether that light comes from a laser. 🔬✨
