This is the water retention basin where we are meeting tonight at 6 p.m. - don’t worry, the photos are from April 2025. Tonight’s goals are to talk about species that could handle the occasional flooding that gets this bad and the best place to plant those trees. Headed to Joyland? Our next Tree Stewards Education event is on for Wednesday night with a location change - we are now meeting at the Joyland Water Retention Basin at 2305 Cabot Drive, Lexington, KY, 40505.

At this meeting, we will be discussing planting plan creation and species selection.

You can do a lot of good by doing very little, or even nothing.

Some ways of handling your leaves help. Others hurt. Where do you fall on this list?

Leaving your leaves where they fall does the most good. It's the richest habitat for overwintering insects, toads, and salamanders, while feeding your soil.

Bagging, burning, or trashing does the opposite. It removes both the habitat and the nutrients your yard needs.

Everything in between still counts. Even one step up this list helps.

Thank you to our great volunteers who showed up Friday morning to help mulch trees at Andover Hills! We managed to mulch approximately 85 trees in just over 2 hours with 5 hard working tree lovers. 💚

We have one more Beat the Heat on the calendar for Friday, September 25th as we freshen up mulch rings around the trees at Trees Lexington’s newly adopted Davis Park, 7am - 9am. We hope you’ll join us!

Exciting news, friends! Trees Lexington has adopted Davis Park through Lexington, KY Parks & Recreation’s Adopt-A-Park program!

Through the summer fundraisers Lex Parks & Rec so graciously coordinates for us with awesome local businesses, we have planted 27 trees at Davis Park in the last two years. Adopting this park seemed like a perfect fit to to our programming as we plan to continue caring for these trees to get them off to a great start. We will hold four events a year at Davis Park for the next two years, with the first in three short weeks on Friday, September 25th! Tree care and more tree planting are on deck. Supported by Hickman Creek Conservancy, our staff has enjoyed working with Andover Forest HOA this summer to map the 800+ trees they have planted in their private greenspace. The data is being entered into the city’s TreePlotter.

This former golf course has been converted and is maintained by the HOAs in the Andover neighborhood, with Andover Forest HOA managing nine former holes of the course.

Trees Lexington has been assisting in tree planting and teaching maintenance skills to Andover Forest residents since 2019. In 2024 we assisted in planting 125 trees as partners with Andover Forest HOA with funding from the city’s Lex Grow Trees initiative. Trees planted as late as 2021 are already 30 feet tall.

In our time mapping, we have observed lots of wildlife such as kingfishers, green herons, Polyphemus moth caterpillars, and annual cicadas.
