Why Age-Specific Training Matters: Ages 13+ 🏋️‍♂️

Once kids reach their teenage years, training can take another step forward.

Teenagers are going through major physical and mental changes, so this is an important time to introduce structured strength training while continuing to prioritize proper technique and safe movement.

At this stage, we can begin incorporating:
✅ Barbells & free weights
✅ Strength machines
✅ Lat pulldowns and other resistance exercises
✅ More structured workouts
✅ Progressive strength training

And it’s not just about getting stronger physically.

Watching those numbers go up, mastering new exercises, and seeing progress in the weight room can create small wins that build confidence and motivation.

Strength training can also be a great outlet for the stress that comes with being a teenager.

The goal is to build strength, learn proper technique, develop healthy training habits, and show young athletes that taking care of their physical health can have a positive impact far beyond the gym.

Why Age-Specific Training Matters: Ages 8–12

Once kids reach the 8–12 age range, their training can start to evolve.

At this stage, coordination and gross motor skills are typically more developed, they’re better at following directions, and they’re ready for more structured workouts.

That means we can start introducing:
1️⃣ Basic resistance training
2️⃣ Bodyweight exercises
3️⃣ Conditioning
4️⃣ Speed & agility drills
5️⃣ More advanced footwork
6️⃣ Strength & coordination work

Resistance training doesn’t mean heavy bench presses or bodybuilding-style workouts. We’re talking about functional movements like farmer carries, weighted planks, and other basic resistance exercises that teach kids how to move and control their bodies safely.

The goal is to build strength, coordination, speed, agility, and athletic ability while continuing to make training fun and engaging.

Every stage has a purpose and at 8–12, we’re ready to take that foundation to the next level.

At Final Round Training, we start building that foundation as early as age 3. When you’re training kids ages 3–7, the #1 priority is simple: HAVE FUN.

At this age, the goal isn’t to lift heavy or follow complicated workouts. It’s about building the foundation they’ll need as they grow.

We focus on:
1️⃣ Gross motor skills
2️⃣ Balance & coordination
3️⃣ Basic listening skills
4️⃣ Following simple directions
5️⃣ Movement through fun games and activities

We might be getting them a full workout, but they shouldn’t feel like they’re “working out.” 😄

Run to the cone. Touch the blue one. Navigate the ladder. Move, play, listen, learn.

These basic skills become the foundation for sports, fitness, and movement later in life.

Why Age-Specific Training Matters for Kids 💪

Every kid is different.

Different abilities. Different needs. Different stages of development.

That’s why we don’t believe in putting every young athlete through the same training program.

At Final Round Training, we work with kids as young as 4 years old all the way through college. Our goal isn’t just to make them stronger or faster, it’s to help them love being in the gym, build confidence, develop healthy habits, and learn how to train properly at every stage.

Over the years, we’ve developed 3 specific phases of training based on age and development.

In this 3-part series, Coach Gary breaks down each age group, what we focus on, and why their training needs to change as they grow.

Because training a 4-year-old shouldn’t look like training a 14-year-old.

Train the kid in front of you — not just the age on the chart.
