"Amara's Farm" by JaNay Brown-Wood is a book that supports agricultural literacy for young readers grades K-5.

Amara is hosting a potluck for friends on her farm, and her snacks won't be complete without pumpkins. She's searched and searched, but she's grown so many plants that she needs help finding them. What do we know about pumpkins? They're large, round, and orange—and, wait a minute, is that a pumpkin? No, that's an apple. Where, oh where could those pumpkins be?

The backyard farm is getting an upgrade! 🌱

I’m so thankful to a friend who gifted us this beautiful raised garden bed. Over the last few growing seasons, I’ve noticed that our crops tend to perform much better in raised beds, so we’re slowly transitioning more of the backyard farm to raised bed growing.

And the timing is perfect. With several trees recently removed from the backyard, we now have a lot more full sun and more growing space to work with. I’m already thinking about adding a few more of these!

Next step: filling this big thing up. 😂 We’ll be layering it with sticks, leaves and other material before adding compost and soil on top.

And at 40, I’m not mad about having a little less bending either. 😂

Can’t wait to show y’all what we grow in here.

It’s October 1st! 🍂

If you need something to do today, I got you. Here are 15 options. Some productive. Some not. 🤷🏾‍♀️

1. Plant some collard greens.
2. Buy a mum and promise yourself this one will survive.
3. Delete 500 screenshots from your phone.
4. Pull up that summer plant that has been dead for three weeks.
5. Start thinking about your Thanksgiving menu like it’s not two months away.
6. Buy another pack of seeds you absolutely do not need.
7. Clean out your car. Or at least take the cups out.
8. Put something in the crockpot and call it fall.
9. Check on your chickens and ask why nobody is laying enough eggs.
10. Finally unsubscribe from those emails you delete every single day.
11. Plant some garlic.
12. Put a pumpkin on the porch and officially declare it fall.
13. Drink some water before you get another coffee.
14. Go outside and enjoy the fact that the mosquitoes are almost done terrorizing us.
15. Sat down somewhere. Everything does NOT have to get done today.

Pick one. Pick five. Or just do #15. I’m not judging.

Happy October, y’all!

Everybody talks about what they’re planting for fall, but let me tell y’all what I am NOT planting this year. 😂

🥦 Cauliflower — All that work for ONE little head? No ma’am.

🫜 Beets — I know they’re good for you. I know you can put them in smoothies. They still taste like dirt to me.

🌱 Brussels sprouts — Now I LOVE Brussels sprouts, but I have been trying to grow them for years. They take forever, take up too much space, and mine never do what I need them to do. I’m tired. 😂

Now, what IS going in the garden this October? Collards, mustards, cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, garlic, onions, carrots, arugula and more.

What’s one thing you REFUSE to plant in your fall garden?

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? 🐔

Public health said: Neither, if you use these correctly.

Stopped by to see my good ol’ friends over at Village Public Health today. I brought fresh eggs. I left with condoms.

Urban farming 🤝🏾 community health

Because apparently this is what public health collaboration looks like around here.

But seriously, if you need condoms, GET SOME! Protect yourself. Get tested. Know your status.

Public health is bigger than most people think. It’s access to fresh food. It’s sexual health. It’s education. It’s making sure our communities have what they need to be healthy.

Different work. Same goal. Healthier communities.
