Introducing Dallas Martinez, one of our Humanities Stars! Assistant Chair of Theatre at Arkansas State University, Artistic Producing Director of Theatre, Assistant Professor of Musical Direction, and Director of the Fowler Center, Dallas Martinez has built a career shaped by a deep belief that the arts anchor community life and offer a shared language across generations. As Artistic Producing Director of Theatre at Arkansas State University and Director of the Fowler Center, Dallas leads a thriving program that blends classical traditions, musicals, and the stories and sensibilities of the American South. The path to Arkansas in 2022 came after years of directing, teaching, and musical directing throughout the Mountain West and Southwest, where Dallas helped regional theatres expand their reach and identity.
With a strong foundation in directing, much of Dallas’s career has been spent guiding singers, actors, and ensembles toward truthful storytelling. His musical direction and producing work often accompany large-scale productions, educational outreach, and new collaborations that welcome artists at every stage of training. This background informs Dallas’s larger teaching philosophy, which treats the humanities as both scholarship and craft, inviting students to build discipline, confidence, and community through performance.
Away from rehearsals and committee meetings, Dallas enjoys a quieter life with his partner, two Bernese Mountain dogs, Bucky and Sam, and an Australian shepherd, Maui, who consider themselves honorary members of the theatre department. Whether directing Shakespeare set in the American South, coaching a musical ensemble, or greeting guests at a Fowler Center event, Dallas remains committed to the conviction that theatre is the last great group project and that gathering to experience a story together is one of the most enduring acts of the humanities.
