PBL training can create a lot of excitement—but what happens when teachers return to the classroom and the projects never launch?

That’s the challenge Babcock Ranch Neighborhood School faced. At one point, only 10% of trained teachers were actually using authentic PBL.

Instead of assuming teachers needed more training, school leaders started asking a better question:
What is getting in the way?

By identifying the real barriers, creating stronger support systems, and consistently reinforcing PBL as a priority, they saw a dramatic shift. By the 2025–26 school year, 95% of trained teachers had launched at least one PBL experience.

What does it actually take to make Project Based Learning sustainable across an entire school?

In this episode of the PBL Simplified Podcast, Ryan Steuer sits down with Rachel Crawford from Babcock Ranch Neighborhood School in Florida to unpack their nearly decade-long PBL journey.

Babcock Ranch started with PBL built into its vision—but implementation wasn’t automatic. After facing growth, post-COVID challenges, teacher resistance, and inconsistent implementation, Rachel conducted action research to uncover what was really getting in the way.

The result? A shift from roughly 10% of teachers implementing PBL to 95%.

Rachel shares how intentional systems helped make that possible, including:
• Communities of practice
• Instructional coaching
• PBL launch schedules
• Critical Friends groups
• Clear expectations and accountability
• Support that bridges the gap between PBL training and actual implementation

One of the biggest takeaways: Training teachers in PBL is only the beginning. Leaders have to create the structures, support, and culture that help teachers actually put it into practice.
