“My motivation comes from within. This is where my heritage as a woman and Latina lives. It reminds me always of how far I have come and how far I still have to go.”—Jay Jay, 1987

With the Latina Le***an series (1986-1990), Laura Aguilar documented the women of her community alongside statements of their beauty, strength, and dignity. The groundbreaking series combats negative stereotypes about q***r women both within and outside the Chicano/Latino community, serving as a type of social documentary (photography which calls attention to inequality and injustice by capturing the realities of life on the margins).

Every Minute Is History: Five Views of Los Angeles presents the work of five photographers whose distinct approaches helped expand traditional representations of Chicano/a communities in Los Angeles during the second half of the 20th century. Visit now through January 3, 2027.

National Ghost Hunting Day is a day for ghosts who hunt...right? 👻

🔮 Hauntings and seances were all the rage in the 1860s, but as threatening as the “ghost” in this photograph may look, the only danger to the man in this photo… is financial. 💸

A supernatural scammer, William H. Mumler, claimed to have accidentally discovered “post-mortem photography:” portraits of living people alongside “spirits” of loved ones, captured from beyond the grave. 👻

Before being outed as a fake, Mumler successfully duped many rich and famous patrons out of their money, including Mary Todd Lincoln. Can you guess what method he used to capture these ghostly images? 📷

Which medieval creature are you? Pause to find out, and tell us in the comments.

These images all come from the medieval bestiary, a kind of encyclopedia of animals illuminated in the Middle Ages. The bestiary features both real and fantasy creatures to life for medieval readers, often offering a moral lesson along the way.
