BREAKING: Widow of Alabama Airman Killed in Iran War Speaks Out After Being Denied Benefits Because Iran War Was Never Officially Declared

Libby Klinner buried her husband. Then the government told her that because Congress never formally declared war, some of the benefits owed to her and her three young children weren't coming.

Major Alex Klinner, chief of squadron standardizations and evaluations at the 99th Air Refueling Squadron in Birmingham, was one of six service members killed March 12 when their KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed over friendly territory in western Iraq while supporting operations against Iran. He left behind a 2 and a half year old son and 7 month old twins.

Marking six months since his death, Libby posted on Instagram: "Six months of a war we can't call a war... The Air Force recently told me that because we haven't officially declared war, my kids and I aren't eligible for some benefits. So not only was my husband killed in a war he never wanted to participate in, but now the benefits we're left with are being dictated by semantics and public perception."

She specified the gap involved combat pay related benefits, including hostile fire and imminent danger pay and combat zone exclusions, benefits tied specifically to the legal designation of a war that officially isn't one.

Her going public worked. Within a day, the Air Force's director of mortuary affairs reached out to her directly, and the branch has now initiated an audit to ensure her family receives everything they're entitled to. An Air Force spokesperson said officials "spoke with Libby Klinner today to ensure she is receiving all eligible benefits she and her family are entitled to," adding, "we remain committed to providing clear information and continued support to Mrs. Klinner, as well as all the families of the Airmen who died in the KC-135 crash."

She's also had to defend simply speaking at all. "To the comments asking why my husband joined the military if he didn't want to be in a war: No one joins the military because they want to go to war," she wrote. "To those commenting that I'm posting this for attention: I suggest that you reserve judgment about what I'm doing until you've had to bury your spouse."

A widow raising three kids under three had to go public just to get the government to check whether her family was owed what they'd already earned. It shouldn't take a viral post to make that happen.

Event honoring servicewomen canceled after most branches decline to attend 06/13/2026

A spokesperson with the Democratic half of the caucus told Task & Purpose that the Navy and the Air Force (answering for the Space Force) declined to participate due to White House and Department of Defense policies that bar participation in diversity, equity and inclusion or identity-related celebrations. The spokesperson said that the Army cited scheduling conflicts due to the service’s birthday, but it “had never been an issue prohibiting them from participating before.”

"8 years ago on this day i signed an 8 year contract with the US Army. i spent about 3 1/2 years on active duty out of my 6 in the Guard. (mostly state active duty never deployed overseas) I spent the last two years in the IRR, yesterday was my very last day.
I joined the Army to help people and to get money for college and because i didn't know what else to do. I met my best friends in the world, and made friendships that have lasted years and distance, stronger than friendships from childhood. i was lucky to have great leaders in my unit that i learned a lot of valuable medical / mental health / combat life support training from
As someone who deeply cares about the troops and individuals currently serving, as well as innocent people in other countries and this country, i feel it's my responsibility to tell you it's a GREAT day to not reenlist, as US Congress is making moves to integrate the Israeli Occupation Forces with the US military...
We shouldnt be in West Asia / "Middle east" at all and the war in Iraq was a lie just like the war in Iran
Free Palestine and F**K the feds, end US global imperialism and zionism. Cheers to being all done with Army proudly served e4 mafia 2018-2026 and not done yet, i want recruiters out of our schools and i want junior enlisted soldiers especially to be safe and informed about what they're involved with"

The Emerging Push to Extend Some US Benefits to IDF Soldiers 04/26/2026

A real policy push has emerged in the United States to extend certain legal protections to Americans who serve in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). In 2024, members of Congress introduced H.R. 8445, a bill that would amend federal law “to provide for the eligibility of United States citizens who serve in the Israeli Defense Forces for certain protections relating to such service.”
Under current law, US veterans’ benefits are tied to service in the US armed forces. The statutory definition of “veteran” appears at 38 USC § 101(2) and limits eligibility to those who served in U.S. military forces or narrow statutory exceptions. The proposal in H.R. 8445 would move away from that framework.
WHO IS PUSHING FOR IT AND WHAT THEY ARE SAYING

The Emerging Push to Extend Some US Benefits to IDF Soldiers Some U.S. lawmakers seek protections for Americans serving in the IDF, raising questions about fairness since U.S. benefits traditionally depend on service to the United States.
