P2S kicked off the fall season with our annual Football Frenzy Meet-n-Eat!

Our Long Beach office came together for an afternoon of game-day nachos and intense competition in the Paper Football Showdown. Congratulations to Nate Behning for taking home the win!

Ahead of the Coalition for Adequate School Housing ( ) 2026 Fall Conference in October, our Senior Project Manager Shane Hanlon revisits a landmark K-12 project for P2S: Los Angeles Unified School District's Marquez Charter Elementary School Rebuild.

Following the original school's destruction during the Palisades Fire, P2S was brought on to the two-phase project, first completing an interim facility. The rebuild timeline, to be ready in time for the school year, was compressed from the usual years-long schedule into months. After our hard-won efforts of prompt coordination and acceleration as a fast-track project in Phase 1, the Phase 2 construction of permanent buildings totaling 56,229 square feet of new campus space is well underway. Hear from PM Shane as he shares the latest update:

“Marquez Elementary School is moving along very quickly as we are 90% complete with DSA Review. We are working very closely with the architect and structural engineer to finalize coordination on roof equipment, roof drains routing, and seismic details. Lastly, we are working closely with LAUSD to put the finishing touches with their Q&A, notes, and controls details. The campus is taking shape, and we are all getting excited to see this start construction in 2028.”

Angular architecture and boulder-like formations at the Indio Civic Campus echo the distinct desert landscape around it. For the P2S Lighting Studio, one of the challenges was to play off of this established visual language.

Throughout the floors of the facility, the lighting design emphasizes sharp edges, corners, and vertical breaks. At the ground level, integrated pedestrian scale lighting softens the campus to enhance approachability.

Our Mechanical Studio Leader Akshay Kumar digs into navigating the Detached Central Plant project for the West Valley–Mission Community College District in our latest Ongoing Project Spotlight. See what he has to say about the team's current priorities and how each step along the way is aligning with and enabling eventual project goals:

⚙️What are the goals and impact of this ongoing project?
For the Mission College campus' Gary G. Gillmor and Family Academic Center, P2S is designing a detached central plant that can support the building's condenser water loop, with the goal of ensuring the building is operational without the use of the geothermal field. This also provides a redundancy that allows the building to be continuously operational. The scope of work for this project came out of a comprehensive report P2S previously provided on the geothermal system serving the aforementioned center.

⚙️What is the project's current status?
P2S is the prime for the project and currently providing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing services. Design is proposed to be completed by November and construction will be sometime in 2027.

⚙️What is one ongoing challenge and our solution?
There are multiple subconsultants whose scope of work we continuously manage. Our team is additionally handling the plan checker, DSA Oakland. We are prioritizing the easy maintenance of the system and assessment of the footprint of the central plant to help with facilitating project demands.

The largest city in Coachella Valley, Indio is now home to a newly minted Civic Campus that the P2S Lighting Studio helped bring to life!

The nearly 38,000-square-foot hub is home to public safety facilities and community amenities, including the Max T. McCandless Memorial Library, a multi-purpose plaza, a dedicated greenbelt, and desert landscaping.

At P2S, we encourage our interns to ask questions and rise to the challenge of answering them as well, whether they're related to working out project solutions, navigating their own careers, or growing into newfound interests.

Next up for our Intern Spotlight, Electrical Engineer Intern Autumn Aguilar shares how the strength of the P2S community has fostered and guided her learning on fronts from electrical safety to energy efficiency:

⭐Tell us a bit about what you do at P2S.
At P2S, I’m learning how to design electrical systems that safely and efficiently supply power to our projects. We also focus heavily on electrical safety, protection, and ensuring our designs meet project requirements and codes.

⭐What inspired your interest in the field you're interning in?
What inspired me to pursue electrical engineering is how it feels like the “black magic” of engineering. We study and work with phenomena we can’t see, yet we can use them to create systems that power our communities.

⭐What about P2S stands out most to you so far?
What stands out most to me about P2S is the strong sense of community within the workplace. Everyone is willing to help and teach me, and they genuinely encourage me to challenge myself and continue developing my skills.

⭐Is there an experience from your internship that you think you'll carry with you?
One experience I’ll carry with me is being trusted with real engineering work and having the opportunity to learn through doing. Being given the support to ask questions, make decisions, and develop my skills has given me more confidence in myself as an engineer.

⭐What's a message you have for future interns?
Don't be intimidated, do your best, and always ask questions when in doubt.

🎂What's your favorite part about working at P2S?
Our projects have a lot of variety. I’ve had the opportunity to work on many unique buildings over the years including science labs, sports arenas, football stadiums, student services buildings, aircraft maintenance, and many more.

🎂What's a project you're especially proud of or enjoyed working on?
The Golden West College Math & Science Building. The building had a lot of high-tech laboratory spaces for all types of sciences. It’s also basically right across the street from me so I get to drive past and admire it almost every day!

🎂How have you grown through your years at P2S? What are some of your learnings?
I’ve gained extensive experience in all phases of projects including proposals, site investigations, energy modeling, engineering design, and construction. It’s great experience to be able to carry a project from early concepts through construction completion and occupancy.

🎂What's something about your work that not a lot of people know or that you'd like to spotlight?
I modeled the entire Mt. San Antonio College campus calibrated to their overall electric bills, in order to help them obtain a large incentive for installing a 2-million gallon fully underground thermal energy storage tank.
