They were the only people on September 11 who knew what their plane was being used for. And they had less than 30 minutes to make a choice.

They were the only ones that morning who knew the truth.

Forty minutes after taking off from Newark, Flight 93 was hijacked. Four men took the cockpit, turned the Boeing 757 east, and pointed it toward Washington, D.C.

It was the last of the four planes taken on September 11. But unlike the others, the people on board Flight 93 had information.

Gathered in the back of the cabin, 13 passengers and crew made 37 phone calls to loved ones and authorities. Through those calls, they learned about the World Trade Center. They learned about the Pentagon.

They realized their plane wasn't a bargaining chip - it was a missile.

So, they took a vote.

At 9:57 AM, armed with nothing more than a food cart and pure resolve, they breached the aisle. The cockpit voice recorder captured the sound of the cart battering the door, again and again. It caught a passenger yelling, "In the cockpit. If we don't, we die."

Inside, the hijackers panicked. "When they all come, we finish it off," one said.

Just 20 minutes flying time from Washington - seconds from breaching the cockpit - the hijackers rolled the plane upside down and crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 580 mph. All 40 passengers and crew gave their lives. The 9/11 Commission later concluded their target was likely the U.S. Capitol or the White House.

Fast forward 13 years to September 10, 2014.

The families of those 40 heroes gathered in Emancipation Hall - inside the very U.S. Capitol building their loved ones had died protecting. They stood where Congress had been in session that dark morning to accept the Congressional Gold Medal, the nation's highest civilian honor.

On the front of the medal was an engraving of the Capitol dome.
On the back were 40 stars.

As then-Speaker John Boehner told the crowd: "Tomorrow, we mourn for what was taken. Today, we consider what was left behind."

Forty ordinary people were handed an impossible reality, voted to fight back, and changed the course of history.

Never forget Flight 93. 🇺🇸❤️
