There’s something powerful about making something with your own hands—and then actually using it in your everyday life.
Handmaking invites us to slow down, work through ideas, understand materials, and create something that has a purpose beyond the process itself. When you can hold it, use it, and see it become part of your life, design becomes more meaningful.
Making isn’t just about the finished object. It’s about learning by doing, creating with intention, and building a real connection to the things we bring into the world, just like this young student.
Design isn’t just something you see—it’s something you feel. Creating with your hands allows you to slow down, experiment, notice texture, weight, movement, and material in a way that digital design simply can’t replicate. The sense of touch gives us information, sparks ideas, and creates a deeper connection to what we make.
Creativity isn’t a fixed skill—it’s a capacity we can build.
The more we experiment, make, question, and try new ways of approaching a problem, the more creative possibilities become available to us.
Creating with our hands, working through imperfect ideas, and giving ourselves room to explore all strengthen that capacity.
Our senses are a powerful part of how we create.
What we see, hear, touch, smell, and experience gives us information that shapes the way we think, imagine, and solve problems. When we engage our senses through hands-on making and exploration, we build creative skills in ways that go beyond simply looking at something on a screen.
As Summer 2026 draws to a close, we’re celebrating a season of creativity that is deeply human, original and physical.
Through Fashion Design, Toy Design, and Architecture, our young designers explored a big question: What does it mean to be human?
Starting with their own senses, they observed, imagined, designed, and made — creating work that is distinctly their own — deepening their connection to themselves and the real world.
A few glimpses from Summer 2026. ❤️
Every project is a chance to imagine, create, and expand creative thinking. This student realized what makes us unique is our ability to think creatively and see the importance in being different.
The feeling of physically using a product you designed and made is unmatched – it is a source of lasting confidence in young designers. The only thing better is getting to share it with your friend!
This game of Tabletop Soccer was ideated, sketched, measured, cut, sanded, painted, and now played with by a student in Wood Toy Design. He’s already won the game!
The sense of smell can evoke strong memories, especially for this young designer.
When challenged to create an architectural design inspired by scent, she knew exactly what she would do.

Meet Midnight the blueberry – from sketch to plush toy! In Toy Design I last week, our students designed and made plush toys inspired by the sense of smell – connecting with the physical world as they make something in the physical world!
