With school out, many young people are spending more time on their devices. It’s a great opportunity to stay connected, but it also increases the risk of online manipulation, which often starts with building trust and gradually shifts to secrecy or pressure.

The most important safety tool isn’t an app. It’s your relationship. Keep conversations open, stay calm, and remind youth they can come to you without fear of getting in trouble.

Watch for changes like increased secrecy, mood shifts, or anxiety around phone notifications. These can be early signs that something isn’t right.

Summer can bring more freedom for young people, but it can also increase risk.

Time away from school can mean less structure, more isolation, and, for some youth, unsafe situations like being kicked out of home, bullying, harassment, or abuse.

Safe Place programs work year-round with community partners to ensure there are safe, accessible spaces where young people can go for help without hesitation. TXT 4 HELP also makes it easy to connect with support right from a phone.

Together, we can make sure every young person has someplace to go…someone to help.

When a young person enters a Safe Place site seeking immediate help and safety, the process is simple:

• The young person informs one of the trained staff member they’re looking for help through Safe Place
• The young person is taken to a secure area, while the staff member contacts the local licensed Safe Place entity.
• A representative will arrive to meet with the youth and discuss/provide available resources.

Safe Place is designed to be accessible, responsive, and centered on providing immediate help and safety to young people.
