On Friday, August 7th, FSH Works Florida had the pleasure of supporting our affordable housing partner, Lincoln Avenue Communities, as they hosted a back to school event. From the free pizza, the backpacks, smiles, and endless supplies, there was so much joy in the air! A huge thank you to the Travis Donte Leslie Sr. Foundation for sponsoring this event. We hope that everyone in the Palm Beach and West Palm Beach county school districts had an amazing first week and we thank you for allowing us to participate!

Today, let’s switch to Family Scholar House Houston to meet India! She lives at The Carpenter in Houston with her young son. She is a Histology major at Houston City College, and is in the Honors College at Coleman College of Health Sciences. India is crushing it with a 3.917 GPA, and was recently selected for the Women Who Rock Childcare Scholarship through United Way, which will provide full payment of childcare for her son this upcoming school year. She works in the Reality Collab at HCC as a work study student and is helping other Carpenter residents get connected to the Honors College to receive full tuition and books. This is why Family Scholar House Houston does what they do.

At Family Scholar House, we’re in the middle of our “Back to School Pack a Backpack Drive.” And on Wednesday, none other than Louisville First Lady Rachel Greenberg showed up to lend a hand! You can join our First Lady in making sure our participants and their children have everything they need for a successful start to the school year. Just buy a backpack and fill it with the supplies they’ll need most — items like index cards, composition notebooks, highlighters, binders (1”- 3”), hand sanitizers, pencils, crayons, Kleenex, folders, pens, notebooks, planners and calendars. Once you’re through shopping, backpacks can be dropped off at Louisville Scholar House, 403 Reg Smith Circle in Louisville. And remember — you can shop on Amazon and have your donated items shipped directly to Family Scholar House. However you shop, thanks to Raachel Greenberg and to you for helping get our kids — and parents — off to a strong start this school year!

There’s something incredibly exciting about moving into a new home. And that’s multiplied when it’s a whole bunch of Family Scholar House participant families moving into brand new homes on our new campus at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College! While construction continues on some of the buildings, several were ready this past Saturday for excited new parents and kiddos to move in. We are so grateful to our volunteers who stepped in to lend a hand. Everybody is very excited at this milestone as we welcome students into our Elizabethtown Family Scholar House campus for the first time.

In partnership with Homeless Services Network and as a member of the Central Florida Continuum of Care Network, Family Scholar House Florida was invited to assist with scoring applications for future housing projects throughout the state. This may not seem like big news, but it’s exciting because it ensures that the selection process will continue to be fair and thorough, and also allows the organizations scoring the applications to gain a deeper understanding of everything that goes into a housing project proposal.

Here’s how Family Scholar House benefits not only our participant families, but you and your community. And it’s pretty amazing.
From intake through move-in and degree completion (3 Years), Family Scholar House’s total investment per family is $13,580.
The average annual public assistance received by a family like those we serve, including SNAP, TANF, Medicaid, Housing Subsidies, WIC and Childcare Assistance, is $53,460 per year.
So for every Family Scholar House graduate who moves into self-sufficiency and away from public assistance, taxpayers save $53,460 — not just once, but for years into the future.
Multiply that by every successful Family Scholar House graduate, and it adds up to tens of millions of dollars saved every year. All from an investment of $13,580 per family — and a lot of love and support.
That’s a pretty good return. And when you support Family Scholar House, whether through your financial gifts, donation of needed items or volunteer time, you make that kind of amazing math possible.
So thank you for helping us help students and their children achieve self-sufficiency and financial security — and in the process, making our community stronger.
