This week, I’ve been talking about one of my favorite leadership principles: CLARITY

One of the biggest mistakes I see leaders make isn’t a lack of care, but rather assuming people know what we mean, what we expect, or what success looks like.

The truth is, people rarely fail because they want to. More often, they’re navigating unclear expectations.

That’s one of the reasons I wrote Stick Figure Leadership.

I wanted to take leadership concepts that often feel complicated and make them practical, memorable, and immediately useful.

Because when leaders communicate with clarity, people gain confidence. And confident people build healthier teams.
Remember, “Confusion creates frustration. Clarity creates confidence.”

I often think about the unique perspective I have on what it means to be American.

I was born here, but when I was five years old, my family became expats and moved to Australia. We returned to the U.S. just as I was starting junior high, and I’ve lived here ever since.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of traveling to more than 20 countries, experiencing different cultures, traditions, and ways of life. And while I’ve loved every opportunity to explore the world, there’s always something special about coming home. 🇺🇸

The people here are warm, friendly, and welcoming. There is a generosity of spirit and a willingness to connect that I never take for granted.

And if you know me, you know I’m all about PEOPLE.

Today, I’m especially grateful for the people who make this country feel like home, AND for the freedom and opportunity we have to connect, lead, serve, and make a difference in the lives of others.

I believe that one of the greatest gifts in life is getting the chance to thank the people who believed in you before you fully believed in yourself.

Today I had lunch with a former mentor, Dennis, who played a significant role in my journey (and whose influence is even mentioned in Stick Figure Leadership). It was a privilege to simply say, “Thank you.”

Never underestimate the impact of investing in someone. And if you have the opportunity, don’t miss the chance to tell the people who shaped your life just how much they mattered.

We are halfway through the year.

This is a great time for leaders to ask a simple question:

Are we on course, or are we just moving?

Many organizations spend time reviewing metrics, goals, and outcomes. Those are important. But if progress has stalled, the real question may not be about the numbers.

IT MAY BE ABOUT THE PEOPLE.

Before adjusting the strategy, take a moment to evaluate trust, communication, clarity, and consistency within your team. Sustainable results are usually the byproduct of healthy leadership.

My husband and I are in the middle of our 25th wedding anniversary trip exploring Italy. One of the things I’ve been reminded of while traveling through Italy is just how small the world becomes when people are involved.

We’ve shared conversations with strangers on trains, gotten recommendations from locals in tiny villages, met couples from all over the world, and even had moments where I connected with others through completely unexpected leadership conversations.

It’s fascinating to me that no matter where you go (Naples, Cinque Terre, Rome, or a small group tour through Pompei), people are still looking for the same things:
Connection.
Purpose.
Belonging.
Encouragement.

Leadership works the same way.

At its core, leadership is not about titles, positions, or perfectly crafted strategies. It’s about people. And when you genuinely invest in people, the world gets smaller in the best possible way.

Relationships open doors.
Kindness creates bridges.
Conversations create impact long after the moment is over.

The more I travel, the more convinced I become that leadership principles translate across cultures, languages, and continents because people matter everywhere.

And because people matter, leadership matters.
