We've got appliance repair... down to a science!

The Science Behind Science Appliance: Step 3 — Form a Hypothesis
We’ve asked the questions.
We’ve done the research.
Now it’s time to make an educated guess using the information we've gathered.
Training, experience, service information, error codes, test results, and the symptoms help us to narrow down the possibilities and decide what needs to be tested next.
But a hypothesis isn’t a diagnosis... we still have to prove it.
Next up: Step 4 — Test the Hypothesis. 🔧⚡

Meet the Team: Casey
If you’ve ever called, texted, or emailed Science Appliance, there’s a pretty good chance we've talked. And if you’ve been with us long enough, you might even remember when I showed up at your house instead of just answering the phone!
I’m Casey, co-owner of Science Appliance. I handle the operations side of Science Appliance, but in the early years, I spent some time riding along with Robert and learning the technical side, too.
I still have longtime customers recognize me on the phone and ask about the kids, since I spent a good portion of those service calls very pregnant 😅
These days, I work from home, where my time is spent on scheduling and dispatch, warranty companies, billing, marketing, customer communication, and all the other pieces that keep the office side of Science Appliance moving.
Working from home means running the business and raising our family have overlapped quite a bit over the years. If you’ve called us, you may have heard everything from cartoons and snack requests to the occasional very important interruption in the background.
My favorite part of Science Appliance is the team we’ve built. I love watching someone come in, learn the trade, gain confidence, and become really good at what they do. More than anything, I’m proud of what this little company has grown into and the reputation our entire team (past and present!) has built together.
Outside of work and family, I’m usually doing something theatre-related or making a little good trouble in my community.
And if you’ve ever wondered who’s behind the Science Appliance social media...
Hi. 👋
It’s me.
09/25/2026
The phones were so quiet today that I almost called the office phone just to make sure it still worked. 😅
Then I checked the calendar.
Ohhhh. It's day 1 of the fair.
It’s such a weird phenomenon. Every year when the fair comes to town, small businesses around here seem to slow way down.
So while y’all out there eating funnel cakes and avoiding responsibilities, remember that supporting local doesn’t always mean spending money.
Likes, comments, shares, tags, and recommendations help more than you know. 😉
Have fun at the fair, Lubbock!

The Science Behind Science Appliance: Step 2 — Do the Research
Once you know what questions you're trying to answer, it's time to do a little homework. 🤓
And yes, appliance technicians do homework.
Research in appliance repair starts long before we walk into your house. Appliances and the technology inside them are constantly changing, which means our Appliantists have to keep learning too. Manufacturer training, service manuals, wiring diagrams, technical bulletins and service information are all part of the job.
And the research doesn't stop when we leave the classroom.
On a service call, we may pull model-specific information, check stored fault codes, review wiring diagrams or service bulletins, and look through manufacturer documentation to better understand what the machine is telling us.
Because two appliances can have the exact same symptom and completely different causes.
Research gives us the information we need to narrow down the possibilities and decide what actually makes sense to test.
And sometimes research means calling another Appliantist and asking, “Okay... have you ever seen THIS before?” 😂
Once we've asked the questions and gathered the information, we should have an idea of what we think is happening.
🔬 Next up: Step 3 — Form a Hypothesis.

Tech Tip Tuesday: Clean Your Coils
Dust, pet hair, and lint can build up around your refrigerator’s condenser coils and airflow openings, making the refrigerator work harder to get rid of heat.
Over time, restricted airflow can mean:
• longer run times
• higher energy use
• poor cooling
• extra strain on components
And as you can see from these before & afters, sometimes there’s a lot hiding underneath or behind your refrigerator.
A good rule of thumb is to check and clean the condenser area about once or twice a year — and more often if you have shedding pets (like me 😅).
Just remember: coil location and cleaning instructions vary by model, so check your owner’s manual before pulling panels or digging around underneath.
A little maintenance can go a long way toward keeping your refrigerator running efficiently.
And if you’d rather not deal with all of that yourself, we do offer condenser coil cleaning as a maintenance service. 😉

👋 Meet Your Appliantist: David
Next up is David, who's about as West Texas as they come.
Originally from Denver City, David has spent most of his life around West Texas and the Permian Basin. He's been working in appliance repair for about five years, after getting his start through family, and has experience with everything from residential appliances to industrial equipment.
When we asked David his favorite part of the job, his answer was pretty simple: helping people.
And if you know David, you know that wasn't just a good answer for this post. He is one of those people we know we can count on. Whether it’s picking up an extra call, helping another tech, or lending a hand outside of work, he’s always been willing to show up when someone needs him.
His appliance of choice is laundry. He says those machines are generally pretty straightforward, and his biggest piece of advice is simple: maintenance matters. A surprising number of problems can be prevented, or at least caught before they become bigger problems, just by taking care of the machine.
Outside of work, David spends a lot of time with his family. He likes fishing, shooting, and apparently decided those hobbies weren't quite exciting enough...
Because David recently tried bull riding. 🤠
Yep. Actual bulls.
So far, this series has taught us that Lamar can do the splits, Kaiden has a secret dance background, and David willingly climbs onto the back of a bull.
Apparently, these guys have a lot of hidden talents 😂
We’re glad to have David on the Science Appliance crew. 🧪🔧

We had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Wheelchair TEXAS 2026 Elisha Aguirre, at yesterday’s Small Business Leadership Conference!
Lisa, thank you for the kind words and for taking a moment to visit with us after Robert's panel. We’re always grateful for opportunities to connect with people doing meaningful work in our community, and we appreciate everything you’re doing to advocate for people with disabilities across Texas. 💙
Thank you Science Appliance for your time and expertise on the panel today Robert and to you both for the photo and your support in our community with peoples with disabilities!
Let’s Roll Texas
Ms Wheelchair Texas 2026 Elisha (Lisa) Aguirre
Really proud of Robert for representing Science Appliance at the Small Business Leadership Conference today 💙🧡
He brought the perspective of a genuinely local, owner-operated business where the owners are still very much in the business. He shared some experience about growth, hiring, marketing, and the realities that come with it.
Thank you, Robert, for always showing up for this business, our team, and our community. You did a great job today.

Meet Your Appliantist: Kaiden
There’s a pretty good chance a lot of our customers have already met Kaiden.
He’s been part of Science Appliance for about five years altogether, and has been working in appliance repair for around seven years total. He got into the industry completely by chance when a friend needed a hand and Kaiden needed a job.
One thing Kaiden says people don’t realize about appliance repair is how much complex diagnosing actually goes into it, and the most obvious problem isn’t always what has failed. And he's right about that. Knowing how to diagnose the real cause instead of just swapping parts until it works is what sets a technician apart from someone who's just handy.
So, it's a good thing Kaiden likes figuring out how things work.
And also, motorcycles.
A lot of motorcycles.
When he’s not here, you can probably find him at Misfit Motorcycles, the motorcycle shop he runs and owns. So, yeah, it's a little more than a hobby.
But... the most important thing we learned while gathering information for these posts—and somehow did NOT know after all these years:
Kaiden was in an actual dance troupe once upon a time.
Between Lamar's splits and Kaiden’s newly revealed dance background, we may be starting a TikTok trend soon… stay tuned for that. 🕺😂
If you’ve had Kaiden in your home over the years, you already know the personality that comes with him. He’s knowledgeable, funny, a little sarcastic, and very much Kaiden.
We’re glad he’s been part of the Science Appliance crew for as long as he has.
