2 week update on Berry's litter.
Eyes are open and the colors are in!
2 solid blue, 1 broken blue, 1 solid opal, 1 broken opal, and 5(!!) REW! All 10 babies are fat and thriving! Berry is an amazing momma. Not sure I've seen a rabbit drink so much water.
We have not had any ruby-eyed white French Lops in our barn previously, and in this litter the recessive gene reigns supreme!
Shows what I know, guessing that they were either cream or frosties!

We added a new buck, who we are calling "Benjamin," from Thompson 3B Rabbitry recently. He is an 8 month old broken chinchilla buck who is growing out nicely! We will add him to the mix soon to help our overall type and to diversify our genetics.
As our kids say, "He's a pretty chill guy."
He's very handsome!

10(!) healthy babies and one DOA born yesterday from Berry (blue) and Barney (broken cream). I'm seeing blues, creams, frosties and maybe an opal or 2 in this blurry, wiggly pile. π
About 9 months ago we assessed and discussed our family priorities and I decided I could contribute more by downsizing the Rabbitry. It took a bunch of pressure off immediately, not needing to clean as many poo trays, feed as many bunnies, worry about breeding schedules, etc. We went from 10 seniors and a few grow outs to 5, so nothing too crazy, but it was what we needed at the moment. Once we got the numbers down, I realized I hadn't planned very well and we only had solids left. π Oops!! Since then, we've only had one litter and it's been great, but we missed getting the extra variety of colors that come with broken in the mix.
We then found an amazing broken chinchilla buck from Thompson 3B Rabbitry that we reserved, and an opportunity came about to get Barney, a broken cream, back from Misty Woods Farm. My kids hadn't forgiven me for selling Barney to begin with, and we're so grateful to get him back! As I write, I'm laying in the grass in our run, and Barney is running around me booping my hand for pets and munching on plantain. We are grateful for the break, and learned to plan wisely, pace outselves with our passions, and monitor our commitments so that the important things in life don't get missed.

We noticed last night that the blue point baby was acting lethargic and had some matted poo on her bottom. I cleaned her up and gave her some Critical Care, which she ate willingly. Her tummy was grumbling so I gave her a rub and separated her from the litter so she could relax and have her own food and water. This morning she was still lethargic and no poo in the tray. I gave her another tummy rub and headed to work. Later my family let me know that they checked on her and she was gone.
We were so looking forward to keeping her around here! She was absolutely beautiful and such a sweet, bouncy personality. She was almost 7 weeks old.
This, unfortunately, is why we wait until 8 weeks to consider reservations, and until 10 weeks old, at the earliest, until they can leave. You never know at this age what can happen in their development that can cause issues, or who can fend off GI Stasis or bloat if it pops up. π₯

French Lop baby playtime tonight. Who is your favorite?
1 month old
3 week video of the bebes! Ears are in that funny stage where they're trying to lop. These guys are so sweet!! Genders were checked and we think the smoke pearl and frosty/blue point are does and the blue and tiny opal are bucks.
We like to temper expectations around here: the blue point/frosty might stay. π

Sandra's babies got a quick wellness check today. They are all fat and healthy, even the tiny opal baby. π Eyes are open and they're starting to get curious. I love the ombre of the grays showing 4 different genetic colors! Blue, opal, blue point(?), and blue frosty(?). We'll know more about the colors the more the fur grows out. Litters like this help us understand what recessive genes are hiding behind our senior buns.

Update: 1 week old French Lops!
I take them out everyday and handle them for a few seconds each, just so they are used to being picked up.
This opal x opal pairing gave us some surprising, exciting colors! I was hoping for at least one blue, and got the blue and 2 extra colors! I'm excited to see them grow out. My guess is blue frosty or blue sable point/ blue point. Any color gene people have opinions? There is sabled blue chin and behind the mom.
