Your child insists the couch is a boat. Do you correct them?

Please don't. That's not a misunderstanding. That's one of the most sophisticated things a young brain does.

To pretend a couch is a boat, a child has to hold two things at once: what's real, and what could be. Researchers call it symbolic thinking, and it's the same mental move behind reading a word and hearing a sound, or seeing the number 5 and picturing five apples. 🧠

Here's what imagination is quietly building:
💡 Flexible thinking — if this can be that, what else is possible?
🗣️ Language, because a story needs words to exist
🎨 Confidence, because a child trusted with their own idea learns their ideas are worth having
🧩 Problem-solving, since every pretend scenario has rules to figure out
❤️ Empathy, because playing someone else means imagining how they feel

None of this shows up on a worksheet. All of it shows up in kindergarten.
