Artists are blooming here at home and all over the world, inspired by their deep roots in Macon's lush culture. Lest you fall into stereotypes about Central Georgia, these pages are full of the ways that Maconites influence and inspire. The Arts Issue will be on stands and in your mailboxes soon.

Emmy Award-winning actor Carrie Preston, on our cover perched atop a Central Park boulder, hasn’t forgotten her Central High School roots as she’s about to premiere as the title character in the fourth season of CBS's hit “Elsbeth.”

The legacy of multidisciplinary art scene phenom Beverly Buchanan is being displayed across Europe, even while Maconites have the privilege to discover her here at home at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. During her time in Macon, she found her flowers.

The likeness of Netche Gray, who shared songs, stories, and stickball with his people as a Muscogee culturebearer, stands tall in a recently unveiled sculpture in East Macon’s Bicentennial Park crafted by Kenneth Johnson (Muscogee/Seminole). It symbolizes a growing relationship across time and space from the Ocmulgee River to Okmulgee, Okla. with the Muscogee nation in their ancestral homelands.

The mark of Macon’s art scene passes in small ways, too, rippling outward to make big impacts, from connoisseurs curating private collections, to flea market finds that find you, to fashion choices that feel fearless.

Join us in the audience, the gallery, reading in our pages, and all the special spaces where expression makes us human. Get the Arts Issue — subscribe today or pick up your copy.

For Julia Morrison, the arts are about more than what happens on stage. They’re about connection, belonging, and creating a stronger community.

“I want to use audience development work to craft stronger invitations for people to take part in the arts, as a way to enhance well-being.” - Julia Anne Morrison

Meet Julia, Executive Director of The Piedmont Grand Opera House and Robins Financial Capitol Theatre, and one of our 2026 Five Under 40 honorees.

Macon’s urban core has seen two decades of progress. Now, change is creeping toward the river and over to the East Side of town.

One of the largest projects on the horizon is the planned $350 million arena in East Macon. Expected to open in 2028, the arena is envisioned as far more than a sports and entertainment venue. Plans include space for concerts, conventions, and community events, along with a workforce development center created in partnership with Central Georgia Technical College. The project is also expected to create hundreds of jobs and serve as a catalyst for additional investment in the surrounding area.

“The construction may be an inconvenience today, but the long-term benefits will be significant for our residents, business owners, and those traveling through our community.” - Paul Bronson, Macon-Bibb County Commissioner for District 2.

“I never say no to a side quest.”

For Melissa Rodriguez-McClain, those side quests have become a life of service, connection, and community. As Community Engagement Coordinator at El Refugio, she’s especially passionate about working alongside communities too often overlooked.
