Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved people there were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and the last place in the Confederacy to receive that news.
It became a federal holiday in the US in 2021, signed into law by President Biden. Many states also recognize it as a state holiday.
