Balance sheet schedules are one of the most useful things to have clean before year-end planning begins.
When the balance sheet is reconciled and organized heading into Q4, every year-end conversation starts from a position of clarity.
Clean balance sheet schedules mean the numbers that feed into tax planning, lender conversations, and year-end close are already reliable. Loans tie to statements, receivables reflect what is genuinely collectible, and there are no lingering items from prior months that need untangling before the year can close cleanly.
Save this before year-end cleanup begins.

October is when the best year-end tax planning actually starts.
The businesses that finish the year in the strongest tax position almost always start planning in Q4, not December.
October numbers give a clear picture of where the year is landing and how much runway is left to act on it. When the books are current heading into this month, the conversations around deductions, income timing, and year-end moves can happen with enough time to make them meaningful rather than last-minute.
Follow for year-end readiness content to help you finish 2026 strong.

A proactive economic nexus review before year-end puts you ahead of the conversation.
Businesses that review their multi-state sales activity before year-end are the ones that get to make decisions rather than react to them.
Economic nexus thresholds are based on sales volume and transaction counts, and a business that has been growing across state lines may have crossed thresholds in states it has not yet registered in. Catching that now means you can address it on your terms, with plenty of runway before annual filings are due and before any state revenue department asks the question first.
Save this if sales cross state lines.

Manufacturers who reconcile inventory and WIP monthly head into year-end with a real advantage.
When inventory and work in progress are part of the monthly close process, year-end becomes a confirmation rather than a catch-up.
A monthly process for valuing inventory and WIP means the numbers are already clean and current when year-end planning begins. It also means the balance sheet reflects what is actually on the floor throughout the year, which makes for better decisions on purchasing, pricing, and capacity well before December.
Save this before the next close.

Revenue is a great start. Knowing which work actually generates it is even better.
The manufacturers who grow most confidently are the ones who know exactly which jobs, products, and customers are worth scaling.
Total revenue tells you how much came in. Margin by job or product line tells you where it actually came from and which parts of the operation are worth doing more of. That level of visibility turns growth from a volume question into a quality question, which is usually where the most valuable decisions live.
Save this if product or job profitability is still unclear in your business.

Wisconsin Manufacturing Month is a great time to think about the accounting behind what you build.
Great manufacturing operations run on precision, and the accounting behind them deserves the same standard.
The most well-run manufacturers we work with treat their accounting function the way they treat their production floor — with structure, consistency, and a process built to catch problems early. When the books reflect what is actually happening in production, inventory, and cost of goods, the financial picture becomes a tool for making the operation better rather than just a record of what already happened.
Follow for manufacturing and accounting systems content all month long.

Better reporting is usually the right next step before bringing in CFO-level support.
The businesses that get the most out of advisory support are almost always the ones that already have clean, reliable reporting in place when the engagement starts.
Strong advisory work starts with a clear picture of what the business is actually doing financially. When reporting is current and organized, every conversation moves faster, and every recommendation lands on something solid. Swipe through for what decision-ready reporting looks like before a CFO or advisory engagement begins.
Reach out if your reporting is not where it needs to be for the decisions ahead.

Year-end tax planning starts with September numbers.
The most effective tax planning conversations happen in Q4, not April, and they start with knowing where the business actually stands right now.
When September numbers are current, the runway to year-end becomes a real planning window. Income timing, deductions, retirement contributions, and business structure decisions all land better with three months of room to act on them. That window is open right now, and it is one of the most valuable ones on the calendar.
Save this before waiting until December to start the conversation.
