The Open Bayou

I’ve been thinking about this record for a long time, even before I knew all of these pieces would end up belonging together.

We recorded it quickly, in a few days between shows, but the record itself came together more like a process of discovery. Riffs, melodies, phrases and little bits of ideas kept showing up while we were out touring, and I tried not to force them into anything too early. I just kept following them and listening for where they wanted to go. Over time, they started connecting in ways I couldn’t have really planned.

I feel closer to this record than anything I’ve made before. There’s less distance between the imagination and the recording. I was able to get out of the way a little more and let the ideas reveal themselves.

There’s a lot of Louisiana in it. The heat, the water, the trees, the city, the feeling of things growing wild and half out of control.

'The Open Bayou' is out October 16. I’m really proud of this one, and I can’t wait for you to hear it as a whole.

"Namely, nothing strains here. Johanson’s voice has the languid feel of a hot, humid day. His fat guitar sound carries distortion like it’s the default setting, and his note choice shows a deep appreciation for the harmonic nuance available in the form." - Glide Magazine 🐊
