Messiah Church - ELCA

I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day; I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
For I might misunderstand you and the high advice you give,
But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live. (Edgar Guest)

September 27 2026 Sermon This is "September 27 2026 Sermon" by Messiah Church on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.

It has been a couple of busy days for Senior Adult Ministry (SAM). Yesterday was Monday and you guessed it…CORN!!! Ring up another 3200 pounds of labeling canned whole kernel corn.

But this was far from a normal Monday for SAM at Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB). We had our Open House and nine Messiah folks attended! That is awesome as more and more Messiah folks have heard about our outreach ministry and want to learn more about what we do.

You will see from the pictures that the guests learned about the difference between a food bank and a food pantry, saw SAMies in action, had a great visit or recess, and then toured SHFB. Some of the guests stayed and kept labeling with the SAMies.

Today, Barb and Walt Herrod opened the fall hike season for SAM with a hike at McCarthy Park in Cottage Grove, Wis.

It has been a while since a SAM update has been published. We were off last Monday for Labor Day but we worked yesterday and will again next Monday.

Yesterday we processed over 3200 pounds of canned corn. These are nice 8 ounce cans with flip tops. That makes it nice for people that may not even have a can opener.

Now, time out to promote the forthcoming church cookbook. You are probably asking why I jumped from corn to just another church cookbook of which you probably have half a dozen cookbooks from a variety of churches as you grew up. Well, Claire Gensch made one of her mom’s favorite desserts for recess yesterday and WOW!!! That recipe will be in the cookbook. Right there is the number one reason to add another church cookbook to your inventory. So be sure to jump when the first printing hits the streets!!

A special thank you to Pat Ertel for taking all the SAMie pictures yesterday. Enjoy the smiles as we serve our friends in need.

Messiah Family Campers returned rested and filled from their 'Sanbath' weekend! Filled with campfires, hikes, lots of songs and games, and deep connections. I can't wait to see how that tie-dye turned out! A big thank you to Teresa and the volunteer kitchen crew for all the yummy food!

Lord, take me where you want me to go, let me meet who you want me to meet, tell me what you want me to say, and most of all Lord keep me out of your way. (Fr. Mychal Judge)

Guess what? The Senior Adult Ministry (SAM) Open House at Second Harvest Food Bank (SHFB) is right around the corner. Have you wondered how you can be part of the SAM fun at SHFB while being part of our outreach mission work?

The Open House is set for Monday, September 21, from 1:30-3:30 pm. You will see SAMies in action, have “recess” with them and ask questions, and then take a tour of the SHFB facilities.

Forms for volunteer dates for the first half of 2027 will be available at the Open House.

Sign up for the Open House on the kiosk at church or send an email to [email protected]
