Today, we join the nursing community in mourning the loss of Dr. Barbara Nichols, DNSc (hon), MS, RN, FAAN, past President of both the American Nurses Association and the Wisconsin Nurses Association.

Dr. Nichols was a trailblazing leader whose lifelong commitment to nursing, advocacy, equity, and leadership transformed the profession in Wisconsin and across the nation. As the first African American president of both WNA and ANA, she broke barriers while inspiring generations of nurses to lead with compassion, courage, and purpose.

Her work helped strengthen Wisconsin's nursing workforce and influenced national policy through her leadership, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to advancing the profession. In 2022, she was inducted into the ANA Hall of Fame in recognition of her extraordinary contributions.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Nichols' family, friends, colleagues, and the countless nurses whose lives she touched. Her legacy will continue to inspire the nursing profession for generations to come.

We will share additional information regarding memorial services as it becomes available.
