Test Prep Alabama helps students raise ACT scores through research-based strategies, clear instruction, and smart practice.

Led by an educator with 17 years experience who believes how you study matters just as much as what you study.

If your ACT prep routine is “read the passage again until it clicks,” I want to gently interrupt you.

Rereading feels like studying. Your eyes move across the text, the words feel familiar by the third pass, and that familiarity gets mistaken for mastery. But familiarity and retention are not the same thing, and the research on this is not close.

In a now-classic study, Roediger and Karpicke had college students learn passages one of two ways: rereading them repeatedly, or reading once and then testing themselves on the content. A week later, the self-testing group remembered significantly more than the rereading group, even though the rereading group had felt more confident right after studying.

For ACT prep, this translates directly. Instead of rereading a passage until it feels familiar, close it and try to summarize the main argument from memory. Then go back and check yourself. It will feel harder and less certain in the moment. That discomfort is the part that’s actually building retention.

Small shift, real payoff, especially with a test date on the calendar.

You're rereading your notes the night before the test. Everything looks familiar. You're nodding along, feeling good, feeling ready. By the time you close the notebook, you're basically stoked! You've got this.

Then you sit down for the test... and crash out.

Turns out there's a name for that feeling betraying you. UCLA researcher Robert Bjork calls it "desirable difficulty." Basically, the study methods that feel easy in the moment (rereading, cramming) are usually the ones that don't stick. The stuff that feels harder, like spacing your studying out over a few days instead of hours, is what actually sticks.

And it's not just a theory. A big research review (Cepeda et al.) looked across dozens of studies and found the same thing every time: spaced practice beats cramming for long-term retention, even when you study for the exact same total amount of time. Some studies even showed spaced learners remembering roughly double what crammers remembered a few weeks later.

So here's the move: got 3 hours to study for next week's test? Don't blow through them all the night before. Split it into 3 sessions across 3 days instead.

It may feel less efficient in the moment, but it willl actually work when it counts.

What's a study habit you had to unlearn once you realized it wasn't actually working?

I have seen an abundance of test prep businesses advertising workshops or courses taught by "students who made a 34 or higher and can tell you all their secrets!" Doing well on the ACT and being able to teach the ACT are not the same skill.

Scoring a 36 doesn't teach you how to scaffold a struggling reader. Scoring a 30 doesn't teach you how to explain why a comma rule works to a kid who's never been taught grammar explicitly. Even scoring a 26 doesn't teach you how to explain math to a student who missed the foundations of number sense. Taking a dozen practice tests and improving your own score doesn't mean that same method will work for someone else. Knowing the answer and knowing how to build the answer in someone else's brain are two completely different jobs.

I get asked a lot if I offer a score guarantee. I don't and I never will, because anyone promising a guaranteed score increase is selling something, not teaching something. What I can tell you is this: I have never had a student's score go down after working with me. Not once.

And I don't just say that. Here's what it actually looks like at scale:

As the Instructional Partner at Hartselle High School, I work with teachers on ACT-aligned instruction school-wide. The most recent HHS ACT data is:

📈 Composite score: 22.3
📈 52% of students now meet 3+ College Readiness Benchmarks (state average: 18%)
📈 Students scoring 30+ nearly doubled — 13 students in 2024, 27 in 2026
📈 Every single subject area gained 2+ points in two years

That's not luck, and that's not one good class of kids. That's what happens when instruction is built on how the brain actually learns instead of how prep "feels" like it should work.

I see the same kind of consistent growth in my own tutoring and workshops, one-on-one and in small groups. The method is the same whether I'm coaching 250 students through a school or sitting across the table from one.

Teaching is a skill. Test-taking is a skill. They are not the same skill. Your student, your most prized possession, deserves someone who's spent a career on both.
