It’s Newsletter Tuesday! My second newsletter provides a brief legislative update and then a deeper look at committees, focusing on how good bills get axed.

The Heart of Wisconsin It’s been a busy and productive month at the Capitol, and I’m excited to update you on the work we’ve been doing to move Wisconsin forward. From protecting our natural resources to defending fundamental freedoms, I’ve been focused on legislation that puts people—not politics—first.

FYI: Our Madison office will have reduced hours this week as my staff is on vacation from July 20th - July 24th.

The importance and impact of small community banks is profound. With the best interests of their communities, economy, and residents' well-being in mind, they reinvest their money locally.

The International Bank of Amherst (IBA) believes in our small businesses, helping them open their doors and grow. They support our charitable organizations and community centers with donations, and assist young families looking to purchase their first home, plant roots, and build a community. IBA believed in my wife and me when we came to them for a loan to purchase our first home and starte our family, and for that, we are incredibly grateful.

When I was asked to participate in Take Your Legislator to Work Day, I could not have been more honored. During my visit, I saw the bank teller who opened our account when we moved to Amherst in the late 2000s, and she greeted me like an old friend. I also met with one of the bankers who believed in us and helped our family plant our roots, and we discussed their legislative priorities to help keep their clients safe and protected. Afterward, I enjoyed a stroll through the Village, which will always have a special place in my heart. Thank you, International Bank of Amherst, for being a keystone in our community.

📣 We're updating our office hours!

Our Madison office will be open at the times below from mid-July until the first week in September.

Climate change is not a political debate; it is our reality. Our choices as individuals, Wisconsinites, Americans, and inhabitants of this planet are the root cause of this crisis, but WE are also the solution.

When we engage with our citizenry, scientists, public health professionals, industry leaders, and ecologists to discuss climate-smart policies and deeper understanding of the Earth's systems, we create real opportunities to combat this existential threat. For decades, these critical conversations have been ignored and dismissed by my Republican colleagues in the legislature who label these efforts as alarmist, conspiracy-driven, anti-capitalist, and un-American.

However, there is nothing un-American about wanting clean air and water for every resident of our state. There is no conspiracy when our communities are impacted severe flooding and our air is thick with wildfire smoke. Furthermore, climate-smart innovation and technology are hardly anti-capitalist; by planning proactively, we can save families, communities, and taxpayers billions of dollars, while preserving our planet.

The consequences of inaction are already here, affecting our health and our environment. Climate change is real, and I and WI Assembly Democrats will continue to fight for our planet and for you.

It is an honor and a complete surprise to receive The Golden Radish Award from the State Innovation Exchange for my first-term work on rural and agricultural policy.

From my time as a Portage County Board Supervisor until today as your State Representative, I have strived to build bridges between communities that may not always see eye to eye, but exist in a symbiosis that requires mutual respect, understanding, and ultimately, a common goal. I have always pushed back on the myth of an urban-rural divide and firmly believe that we need to shift the zeitgeist to reflect the reality of our urban-rural partnership and how we can thrive when we work together.

I am grateful and humbled to be recognized for this work and the relationships being built to make our world just a little more tolerant, a little friendlier, and a lot more regenerative, while focusing on farm vitality and deep ecological sustainability.

Congratulations to the Stevens Point Area YMCA and the Village of Plover on the grand opening of their new YMCA branch. What an amazing space filled with great energy, a weight training center, walking track, and indoor pickleball courts (with help from the Heart Of Wisconsin Pickleball Association). Such an welcome asset to our community.

Compost! It happens! Thank you to the International Symposium on Animal Mortality Management (ISAMM) and UWSP College of Natural Resources soil and water resources professor Rob Michitsch for choosing the Village of Plover and the Food + Farm Exploration Center to host an amazing couple of days learning about all things decomposition.

In a world filled with opportunity and progress sometimes things can go sideways in a hurry when it comes to herds, flocks, and gaggles of critters getting infected with disease. It's the farmer, scientists, and practitioners of best practice composting to know how to deal with these situations in a safe and timely manner so that the rest of us stay healthy and keep our food systems resilient.

I was grateful to see some of our local composting experts, Bucket Ruckus and Busy Bee Compost at the event as well.
