When our elected leaders recognize the importance of mental wellness, it makes a real difference.

Thank you to Sen. Sam Givhan for securing $50,000 in support from the Madison County Legislative Delegation for our mental wellness programs. This investment will help ensure children in foster care and other youth who have experienced trauma have access to the care and support they need to heal and thrive. 💜

This week we hosted a training seminar on trauma-informed advocacy for children in foster care and the court system.

When children have experienced trauma, their behaviors and reactions aren't always what they seem. Understanding how trauma affects the brain, recognizing common triggers, and learning how to build trust can help advocates, caregivers, and professionals respond in ways that help children feel safe and supported, especially in the courtroom.

We hope the foster families, court appointed advocates, attorneys, social workers, and other professionals who attended left with practical tools they can use to better advocate for the children they serve. Thank you to everyone who took the time to be there and for the work you do every day.

Equine bingo is more than just a fun activity in the pasture.

During the exercise, the client and therapist observe the horses and identify specific behaviors on a bingo card. While it may seem simple, the activity is intentionally designed to strengthen skills such as emotional regulation, sustained attention, mindfulness, grounding, and observation.

In this case, Snowflake decided to become part of the lesson. 😆

That's one of the unique aspects of equine-assisted therapy. Interactions with the horses aren't just enjoyable experiences. Each activity is thoughtfully designed to support therapeutic goals and help clients build the emotional and behavioral skills that promote healing.

Our program's aim is to help our clients learn things through doing, as opposed to sitting in an office. Through the healing power of our horses at the Damson Family Barn, clients learn about things like communication and boundaries and gain an understanding of why they may respond to triggers the way they do. If you think you can benefit from the healing power of horses, don't hesitate to reach out through our website at hopefortrauma.org.

Businesses often frame their first dollar. We may have to frame our first penny.

This penny was brought to the Smith Family Wellness Center by a little girl who wanted to pay for her therapy appointment.

Now it's taped behind our reception desk as a reminder of why we're here. Not because of what it's worth, but because it represents the trust of a child who feels the work we're doing with her and others has a real impact.

We're incredibly grateful to the Huntsville Hospital Community Health Initiative and the Jean Wessel Templeton Committee for their generous support of our Smith Family Wellness Center.

Their investment helps us sustain and expand the impact of our trauma-informed mental health services, ensuring that children and families have access to high-quality therapy and support when they need it most -- regardless of income, insurance status, or ability to pay.

Because of CHI, we can continue removing barriers to care, promoting healing, and helping children and families build brighter, healthier futures.

Today, the Kids to Love Child Placing Agency team joined our therapists for a training on family age and mixed maturities. We always appreciate opportunities to share knowledge, learn from one another, and strengthen the skills that help us support the children and families in our care.
